How I Use AI Writing Tools for SEO: My Experience and Lessons Learned

AI writing tools have become an essential part of my workflow as a solo founder running multiple projects. Over the last year, I’ve experimented with various AI content generators for different purposes, from building blogs that bring organic traffic to scaling content marketing for my directories and SaaS tools. In this article, I want to share my personal experiences with AI writing platforms like SEObot, Koala Writer, and Perplexity Deep Research, along with thoughts on others like ContentShake AI, Scalenut, and Outrank, which I’ve explored but haven’t fully adopted yet. I hope this will give you a more practical perspective on how these tools perform in real-world use cases, beyond the feature lists.
How AI Writing Tools Fit Into My Business
Running several businesses, including Print2Social, PrintOnDemandBusiness.com, and AffiliateCompanies.net, content marketing is crucial for attracting traffic. I don’t have the luxury to write every piece myself, so AI tools help me scale content production without sacrificing too much on quality.
SEObot: Fully Autonomous and Surprisingly Effective
For Print2Social’s blog, I tested SEObot (seobotai.com*), and what surprised me most was how hands-off it was. I set the topics, and the system took care of the rest, from keyword research to internal linking and even some traffic analysis.
Some of the articles written by SEObot, like “Print on Demand Automation”, actually brought traffic and ranked well. The major upside? It saved me hours of work, and I could focus on other parts of the business.
Pros:
Fully autonomous: create content with almost no manual effort
Built-in keyword research and internal linking
Traffic and performance monitoring
Cons:
Limited editing capabilities (but that’s the point I guess)
Not ideal if you want a very personalized brand voice
Koala Writer: User-Friendly and High-Quality Long-Form Content
For PrintOnDemandBusiness.com and AffiliateCompanies.net, I relied a lot on Koala Writer (koala.sh*). Articles like “Best Print on Demand Sites” and “Start an Affiliate Program” were written using Koala and performed exceptionally well.
What I love about Koala is its balance between quality and ease of use. The interface is straightforward, and content feels human-like, especially when using GPT-4 (though you burn through credits faster). Koala’s ability to pull in data from the top-ranking articles also helps create relevant and SEO-friendly content. I paid $45 for 10,000 credits, which made it an affordable starting point.
Pros:
High-quality content that doesn’t sound robotic
Easy to use, clean interface
Offers a lot of other features besides article writing
Cons:
Linking can sometimes point to unrelated content if not carefully reviewed
GPT-4 content uses more credits (higher cost)
Perplexity Deep Research: When You Need Facts, Not Fluff
When I needed research-backed content, like this review of Gelato, I turned to Perplexity’s Deep Research. What impressed me is how thorough it is: it finds real sources, provides citations, and lets me verify the data.
While it’s not an “out-of-the-box” blog post generator like SEObot or Koala, Perplexity is invaluable when accuracy and depth matter. I also used it for social media content ideation and understanding complex SEO topics.
Pros:
Research-backed, factual content with citations
Great for expert-level articles or sensitive topics
Free option available with limitations
Cons:
Takes more time to generate content (2–4 minutes)
Requires manual crafting to turn research into a polished post
Other Tools on My Radar
Besides the tools I’ve used extensively, I’ve researched and considered ContentShake AI, Scalenut, and Outrank:
ContentShake AI (by Semrush): Looks powerful for SEO agencies and businesses already using Semrush. It’s a bit on the pricey side ($60/month) but could be worth it for integrated keyword analysis and optimization.
Scalenut: Strong on SERP analysis and SEO scoring. Probably great for agencies, but a steeper learning curve. I haven’t adopted it yet because of time constraints.
Outrank (outrank.so*): Promising as an all-in-one platform that combines content and image generation. However, it is also on the pricey side at $99/month.
What Worked Best for Me and Why
For hands-off content creation, SEObot delivered quick wins for Print2Social. Perfect when I didn’t have time to manage writers or edit content myself.
For long-form, high-quality posts, Koala Writer won. Articles over 2,000 words from Koala perform very well, and it’s great when you want a human-like tone.
For research-backed content, Perplexity Deep Research is my go-to tool when I need accurate, factual information to build authority.
Lessons Learned and Final Thoughts
AI is not a silver bullet. You still need to review and edit the output to ensure quality and relevance, especially links and citations.
Mixing tools works best. I use different tools for different projects and article types, for example, Perplexity for research-heavy pieces, Koala for long-form content, and SEObot when I want a fully autonomous solution.

Final Recommendation
If you’re considering AI for SEO content, my advice is to try different tools and see what works for your workflow. Start small, maybe with SEObot for quick content, Koala for longer posts, and Perplexity for research. And don’t forget to edit, personalize, and optimize the output. AI is powerful, but human touch still makes the difference. I always start with AI version and then optimise high-performing content manually.
If you’re curious, I’m planning to explore other tools like Scalenut and Outrank soon, so maybe part two of this article will be coming!
What’s your experience with AI writing tools? If you’ve used any of these (or others), drop me a comment or message. Would love to exchange notes!
