How I (Finally) Nailed My Outreachy Internship Application

Spoiler: Don’t Be 2023 Me.

Back in 2023, I yeeted my first Outreachy application into the void—late, half-researched, zero clue. Cringe. Fast-forward to 2025: I got in. Here’s how:

1️⃣ Phase 1: Pre-Application Grind

  • Stalk Outreachy’s socials (politely). Track opening dates like it’s Beyoncé’s tour. Missing deadlines = instant disqualification.

  • Read. Every. Doc. Especially the values—this ain’t a lottery. Merit-based = play smart + hustle hard. Understand what Outreachy stands for and how your skills align.

2️⃣ Phase 2: Application Window Opens

  • Binge alum YouTube talks. These are goldmines for insights on what projects want and how to stand out.

  • Submit early. ONE application only—double-dipping = 🚩. Outreachy values focus and authenticity.

  • Hit “submit”? CELEBRATE. You’re already ahead of 2023 Me. Pat yourself on the back—you’ve taken the first step!

3️⃣ Pre-Contribution Chaos

  • Master Git/GitHub. Trust me, crying later won’t help. Get comfortable with version control—it’s the backbone of open-source contributions.

  • Research sponsor orgs. Pick 1-2 that vibe with your soul. Read their project descriptions, explore their repos, and understand their goals.

4️⃣ Contribution Phase: Collaboration is Key

  • START FAST. The first 48 hours are golden. Introduce yourself on Matrix.org (Fedora’s communication platform) and join relevant channels.

  • Soft skills = cheat code. Ask questions, document your chaos, and be memorably kind. Collaboration > competition.

  • Leverage the community. Fedora’s Matrix channels are filled with experienced contributors who are happy to help. Don’t hesitate to ask for guidance or feedback.

  • Grind smart. You promised 40hrs/week? Deliver. Break tasks into smaller chunks, set daily goals, and track your progress.

2023 Me vs. 2025 Me

2023 Me thought “winging it” was a vibe. 2025 Me says: “Outwork your self-doubt.”

What’s Next?

While I’m currently in the contribution phase (yet to be selected 🤞), I’m channeling that energy into bridging Fedora’s DEI goals with local communities like GDG Accra, Mowblow, ETH Accra, and SuperteamGH. How?

  • Workshops & Collaborations: Hosting Fedora-focused sessions to upskill underrepresented groups.

  • Advocacy: Using Fedora’s tools to empower marginalized communities and advocate for inclusivity.

  • Community Building: Partnering with local tech hubs to create sustainable DEI initiatives.

Your Takeaway

Speed + prep + sweat = Outreachy’s trifecta. Got questions? I’ve got coffee (and regrets). Let’s chat!

(P.S. Outreachy squad: Fedora’s docs and Matrix channels are your new besties. No cap!)

TL;DR: Outreachy is a marathon, not a sprint. Prep well, collaborate often, and outwork your doubts. Let’s go! 🚀
