A Beginner's Guide to Chaos Engineering with Harness

Ever wonder how huge companies like Netflix or Amazon keep everything running when things go wrong? Simple answer: they break stuff on purpose! That's chaos engineering in a nutshell.
I was skeptical at first too. Break my own systems? Sounds crazy, right? But it's actually like a fire drill - you practice dealing with problems before they happen for real. And with tools like Harness, you don't need to be some tech genius to try it out.
What's Chaos Engineering, Really?
It's pretty straightforward: you deliberately cause problems in your system to see how it handles them. Your server crashes, network slows down, database hiccups - these things happen in real life. Chaos engineering just means creating these situations intentionally, in a controlled way, so you can find and fix weaknesses.
Think of it like stress-testing your car before a road trip. Better to find problems in your garage than when you're stranded on the highway!
Why Should You Care?
Let's be honest - downtime is awful. Your users get frustrated, you might lose money, and your team scrambles to fix things at 3 AM. No fun.
Chaos engineering helps you avoid all that drama by making your systems more resilient. Plus, there's something satisfying about being proactive instead of reactive. You're not waiting for disasters - you're preparing for them.
Ready to Try It Yourself?
Now that you’re convinced chaos engineering is worth exploring, where do you start? Thankfully, Harness makes it easier, even for beginners.
Create an account on Harness.
From the dashboard, choose Chaos Engineering.
You'll have two options:
Connect to your Kubernetes cluster
Try the Sandbox Environment (recommended for beginners)
The sandbox gives you a safe playground with an interactive tutorial - perfect for learning the basics without any risk.
Getting Certified
After completing the hands-on lab in the sandbox, you can earn an official certification:
Head to Harness University and choose Chaos Engineering.
Choose the certification option, also check out the study guide below the certification option - perfect for prepping before you register for exam.
Register and take the exam when you're ready.
After finishing, you'll receive a code - enter this in the "Finish" section of the interactive tutorial.
This generates your certification code.
That's it! You're now a Harness Certified Chaos Engineering Developer. 🎉
