Microsoft Copilot is an AI tool built into Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. It helps users complete tasks faster by suggesting text, formatting content, and offering smart responses.

Legal teams deal with large volumes of documents. These include contracts, memos, and formal letters. Copilot can help reduce manual work and make drafting easier and more accurate. This article explains how legal professionals can use it to improve their workflow.

Drafting legal documents is a time-consuming task. It often involves copying language from previous contracts, adjusting terms, and formatting everything properly. Even small mistakes or inconsistent wording can create problems later.

For example, a junior associate might spend hours updating several non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). Each NDA may differ slightly, but much of the content is the same. Repeating the same task across documents not only wastes time but also increases the risk of missing something important.

Copilot is built directly into Word and other Microsoft 365 tools. It can suggest legal phrases, complete sentences, and adjust formatting. It also supports quick edits, tone changes, and summarization.

A legal team working on a supplier agreement can use Copilot in Word to build a draft using language from past documents. Instead of starting from scratch, they can ask Copilot to include standard payment terms or delivery clauses. This helps maintain consistency across documents and saves time.

Improving Speed and Consistency in Drafting

Copilot helps speed up the creation of first drafts. It can write sections like confidentiality, dispute resolution, and termination clauses. These are common in many legal agreements. By reusing reliable language, Copilot reduces the need to rewrite similar content each time.

For instance, when preparing a set of client contracts, a legal assistant can ask Copilot to insert the same termination clause in all drafts. This keeps wording consistent across documents, which is important in legal work.

Legal documents must be clear and accurate. Copilot can highlight vague language or suggest clearer phrasing. It helps improve the quality of the writing without changing the legal meaning.

Teams can also collaborate more easily. For example, during a remote contract review, lawyers can work together in Word or Teams. Copilot helps by pointing out sections that may need revision. A lawyer can accept or reject suggestions while keeping full control of the final version.

Limitations and Considerations

Copilot is a helpful tool, but it doesn’t replace legal expertise. Lawyers must always review documents carefully. The tool’s suggestions are only as good as the input it receives.

Legal teams must also manage privacy and data security. Sensitive client information should not be shared without proper settings in place. Firms should ensure that Copilot is used in a secure and compliant environment.

Conclusion

Microsoft Copilot makes legal drafting faster, more consistent, and easier to manage. It helps reduce repetitive work and supports teams in writing clear and well-structured documents. While it doesn’t replace a lawyer’s judgment, it’s a useful tool that saves time and improves productivity.
