The government is calling on app developers to voluntarily sign up for a new code of practice designed to enhance user privacy and security.

Under the proposed measures, developers will be required to clearly communicate security updates, provide transparent privacy information, and establish secure channels for reporting vulnerabilities.

Over the next nine months, the government will collaborate with major tech firms, including Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Samsung, to promote the adoption of these guidelines. The initiative follows extensive consultations with industry experts to create a framework for safer apps.

Cyber Minister Julia Lopez emphasized the importance of the move, stating:
"We’ve already strengthened laws to secure consumers’ digital devices and telecom networks. Now, we are taking steps to ensure app stores and developers prioritize user safety in the online space."

Developers who sign up will commit to sharing privacy and security details in an accessible format. Additionally, apps must function even if users decline optional permissions, and app stores will be required to implement a security screening process.

While the code remains voluntary for now, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) is reviewing potential regulatory measures to make compliance mandatory in the future.

Paul Maddinson, Director of National Resilience and Strategy at the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), encouraged developers to adopt the guidelines, stating:
"By following this code of practice, developers can demonstrate a commitment to security while protecting users from cyber threats."

Cybersecurity expert Jake Moore of ESET welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant step forward in safeguarding consumer data. He highlighted the importance of vulnerability reporting and security updates, which will help prevent exploits from going unnoticed.

As discussions continue, the voluntary code could pave the way for stronger regulations, ensuring a safer digital environment for users worldwide.
