The Suicide Capital of the World: Mandate Mental Health Education in Schools

India holds a tragic title—one that should shake us to our core. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), India reports the highest number of suicides in the world. Young lives are slipping away, drowning in silence, stigma, and a lack of support. It’s time to act. It’s time to make mental health education a mandatory part of our school curriculum.
The Crisis We Cannot Ignore
Every day, we lose students to the crushing weight of academic pressure, bullying, societal expectations, and personal struggles. A study by the Lancet found that suicide is the leading cause of death among Indian youth aged 15-29. Yet, mental health remains a taboo topic, often dismissed as a phase, a weakness, or a sign of incompetence. Schools, which serve as the second home to children, rarely equip students with the tools to navigate their emotions, stress, and mental challenges.
Why Mental Health Education is Crucial
Early Intervention Saves Lives Teaching students about mental health from a young age helps them recognize symptoms, seek help, and support peers before problems escalate.
Reduces Stigma and Encourages Open Conversations Normalizing discussions about mental health in classrooms will help dismantle the shame and fear surrounding issues like depression, anxiety, and self-harm.
Equips Students with Coping Mechanisms Just like physical health, mental health needs proactive care. Students need to learn stress management, emotional resilience, and healthy coping strategies to handle life’s challenges.
Enhances Academic and Personal Growth A mentally healthy student is a better learner. When students feel supported emotionally, they perform better academically and socially.
Our Demand: Make Mental Health Education Compulsory
We urge the Indian government, the Ministry of Education, and policymakers to integrate mental health education into the school curriculum across all states. This curriculum should include:
Awareness about mental health disorders
Techniques for stress and anxiety management
Guidance on seeking professional help
Training teachers to identify and support students in distress
