M-Pesa Foundation Expands Impact Across Kenya with Education and Healthcare Initiatives

As M-Pesa Foundation marks its 15th anniversary, it continues to drive meaningful change in Kenya through transformative initiatives in education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and environmental conservation. Since its inception, the foundation has committed billions of shillings to uplift underprivileged communities, directly and indirectly benefiting millions of Kenyans.
Advancing Education
One of the foundation’s flagship projects is the M-Pesa Foundation Academy, a residential high school in Thika that provides holistic education focused on leadership, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Established in 2016, the academy targets gifted yet economically disadvantaged students, offering them world-class education opportunities.
Karen Basiye, Director of Sustainable Business, Social Impact, and M-Pesa Foundation, highlights the success of this initiative. She recounts the journey of one of the academy’s graduates who went on to study at an Ivy League university in the U.S. and now works at Goldman Sachs, showcasing the foundation’s role in nurturing global change-makers.
The academy’s rigorous selection process ensures that the most deserving students are admitted. Out of 7,000-8,000 applicants annually, only those demonstrating strong academic performance, leadership potential, and financial need are selected through a multi-stage evaluation, including home visits for verification.
To further support education, the foundation recently launched the “Citizens of the Future” program, which aims to modernize 600 schools by building ICT labs and equipping teachers with digital skills. The initiative, in collaboration with stakeholders such as the Ministry of Education and international donors, seeks to integrate technology into learning and expand scholarship opportunities.
Transforming Healthcare
Beyond education, the foundation has made remarkable strides in healthcare, particularly in maternal health and immunization. In regions like Samburu and Lamu, M-Pesa Foundation has upgraded hospitals, introduced modern maternal care, and provided emergency transport solutions such as speedboats for expectant mothers.
Karen recalls a particularly touching success story of a 90-year-old grandmother who, after suffering from fistula for nearly 70 years, finally received life-changing medical care through the foundation’s interventions. Such efforts have restored dignity and improved health outcomes for many in underserved communities.
The foundation’s initiatives have also significantly boosted immunization rates, with child vaccination coverage reaching 90% in some areas. Plans are underway to integrate technology and collaborate with international medical professionals to further enhance healthcare access across Kenya.
A Future of Sustainable Impact
As M-Pesa Foundation looks ahead, it remains committed to deepening its impact through strategic philanthropy and sustainable development. With ambitious projects like the “Citizens of the Future” initiative and continued investments in healthcare, the foundation is set to shape lives and communities for generations to come.
