since this blog and my webshop is called thecozywhaleshark I thought i’d do an episode about the Whale shark.🐳
Imagine a shark as big as a school bus, covered in beautiful white spots, and gliding peacefully through the ocean. Sounds like a sea monster, right? Nope! That’s the whale shark—the world’s largest fish and one of the most gentle creatures in the ocean! 🐋💙
These polka-dotted giants may be massive, but they’re harmless filter feeders who spend their days cruising tropical waters, slurping up plankton, and stealing hearts with their friendly nature. 💖
Let’s dive into the amazing world of whale sharks and learn why they’re so special—and so vulnerable. 🌎✨
🌟 Meet the World’s Biggest Fish!
Whale sharks are record breakers in almost every way! They are the biggest fish, have one of the longest lifespans, and travel thousands of miles in their lifetime.
📌 Quick Facts About Whale Sharks:
🦈 Size: Up to 18 meters (60 feet)—that’s longer than a school bus! 🚌
⚖️ Weight: Over 20 tons—as heavy as an elephant! 🐘
📍 Where they live: Tropical oceans around the world 🌍
🎂 Lifespan: Over 100 years—talk about a long life!
💙 Temperament: Super chill—they don’t bite, they just vibe! 😎
Even though they’re called “whale” sharks, they’re not whales at all! They’re actually fish, but their size and filter-feeding habits make them similar to whales. 🐳
But wait… what’s the difference between a whale shark and a whale? 🤔
🐳 Whale Shark vs. Whale: What’s the Difference?
Even though whale sharks and whales both have "whale" in their name, they are completely different animals! Here’s how they compare:
Feature | Whale Shark 🦈 | Whale 🐳 |
Animal Type | Fish 🐠 | Mammal 🍼 |
Skeleton | Made of cartilage (like other sharks) 🦴 | Made of bone 💀 |
Breathing | Uses gills to breathe underwater 🌊 | Has lungs & must surface for air 🌬️ |
Reproduction | Lays eggs inside its body, then gives birth to live pups 🦈👶 | Gives birth to live babies & nurses them 🍼 |
Feeding Style | Filter feeder (eats plankton, small fish) 🍽️ | Some filter-feed (like blue whales), others eat fish, squid, or seals 🐟 |
Body Temperature | Cold-blooded ❄️ | Warm-blooded 🔥 |
So, while whale sharks may act like whales, they are 100% sharks! 🦈
🍽️ What Do Whale Sharks Eat?
Despite their massive size, whale sharks don’t hunt like other sharks. Instead, they’re filter feeders, meaning they eat by gulping massive amounts of water and filtering out tiny food particles. 🌊

🍽️ Plankton (tiny sea creatures) 🦠
🍽️ Small fish 🐟
🍽️ Fish eggs 🥚
🍽️ Squid & krill 🦑
They can’t even bite! Instead, they suck in food and filter it through their 3,000 tiny teeth (which they don’t even use!). 🤯
Whale sharks can filter 6,000 liters (1,500 gallons) of water per hour while eating! That’s like drinking an entire swimming pool’s worth of water every day! 💦🏊♂️
🐋 Are Whale Sharks Dangerous? (Spoiler: Nope!)
Unlike their scarier shark cousins, whale sharks are completely harmless to humans. 🌊💙
💡 Fun fact: You can actually swim with them! In places like the Philippines, Mexico, and Australia, you can snorkel alongside these gentle giants—but always respectfully! 🏊♂️🐋
They’re curious, peaceful, and sometimes even playful, often letting divers and snorkelers get up close. But NEVER touch a whale shark! Their skin is super sensitive, and human contact can harm them. 🙅♀️
🚨 The Biggest Threats to Whale Sharks
Sadly, these gentle giants are endangered because of human activity. 😢
❌ Overfishing – They get caught in fishing nets or hunted for their fins. 😡
❌ Boat Collisions – Many whale sharks are injured or killed by passing ships. 🚢
❌ Plastic Pollution – They accidentally swallow plastic, which can be deadly. 🛍️
❌ Climate Change – Rising ocean temperatures are affecting their food supply. 🌡️
If we don’t protect them, whale sharks could disappear forever. 💔
🌊 How YOU Can Help Whale Sharks!
Good news—you can help save whale sharks! Here’s how:
🌱 Reduce plastic use – Less plastic = cleaner oceans! ♻️
🐟 Choose sustainable seafood – Avoid fish caught in harmful ways! 🍣
🏊♂️ Be a responsible tourist – Never touch or chase whale sharks! 🚫
