This is the beginning of a two-part conversation series with Wilfred Neville an experienced Network Engineer who started his career in Sierra Leone and has continued in the United States. My hope is that with Wilfred's insights, there can be an understanding of what the telecommunications world looks like outside of the United States. I have a hope that maybe someone will see this conversation and think of creative ways to collaborate with people in places outside of their homes.

Background & Entry into Telecommunications
Can you share your journey into the telecommunications industry? What first sparked your interest in this field?
Answer: My journey into the telecommunications industry began with a fascination for how people can connect and communicate across vast distances. From an early age, I was intrigued by the idea that someone in one part of the world could instantly share their thoughts, ideas, and experiences with someone on the other side. This curiosity led me to explore various aspects of technology and communication.
During my studies back in 2005, I delved into subjects like computer science, electrical engineering, and information technology. I was particularly drawn to the complex systems that enable data transmission, from the basics of signal processing to the intricacies of network architecture. My interest was further fueled by the rapid advancements in mobile technology, internet infrastructure, and the development of innovative communication platforms.
As I gained more knowledge and experience, I realized the profound impact that telecommunications has on society. It empowers individuals, drives economic growth, and fosters global connections. This realization solidified my passion for the field and motivated me to pursue a career in telecommunications.
Throughout my journey, I've had the opportunity to work on exciting projects, collaborate with brilliant minds, and witness the evolution of cutting-edge technologies. Each experience has deepened my understanding and commitment to the industry.
What was your professional background in Sierra Leone before moving to the United States?
Answer: Before moving to the United States, I was deeply involved in Sierra Leone’s telecommunications sector. I worked as a network manager for one of the country's leading Broadband Wireless Internet Service Provider companies. My role involved designing and maintaining network infrastructure, ensuring seamless communication services, and implementing new technologies to enhance connectivity.
In addition to my engineering duties, I also took on project management responsibilities, coordinating with various teams to roll out new services and expand network coverage in rural areas. My experience in Sierra Leone provided me with a solid foundation in both the technical and operational aspects of telecommunications.
Were there any major challenges or obstacles you faced when starting your career in telecommunications?
Answer: Starting a career in telecommunications in a country like Sierra Leone presents several challenges. One main one was getting the required education, not only it was very expensive it was also limited because finding the right school at the time with experienced teachers was nearly impossible. Most of the things I learned when I started were self-taught because of the determination and curiosity in me.
