A Day in the Life of a Developer Advocate at Anthropic: Bridging AI, Community, and Innovation

Waking up today, I felt that familiar excitement, the kind that comes when you know you’re about to do work that truly matters. As a Developer Advocate at Anthropic, every day is a blend of AI, education, and community-building, and today was no different.

☕ Kicking Off the Day: AI, Ethics, and a Good Cup of Coffee

My mornings always start with catching up on AI news—what’s new in the space? What are developers and researchers discussing? Who’s pushing the boundaries of responsible AI today? At Anthropic, where we prioritize AI safety and alignment, staying updated isn’t just about keeping up—it’s about contributing to the conversation.

As my coffee brewed, I skimmed through recent discussions on AI governance, model interpretability, and safety—key areas we’re deeply invested in. And as always, my mind wandered to Africa—how do we ensure these conversations include African perspectives?

💡 Diving Into Work: Docs, Devs, and Discussions

The best part about being a DevRel? No two days are the same.

Docs & Tutorials – Today, I worked on refining some developer guides for integrating AI responsibly. The goal? Making Claude, our AI assistant, more accessible and usable for developers looking to build safe, scalable AI applications.

Community Engagement – Mid-morning, I jumped into our Discord and forums to interact with developers experimenting with our API. Some were building AI-powered research tools, chatbots, and even content moderation systems. Seeing their creativity firsthand? Incredible.

Bringing AI to Africa – One of the highlights of my day was brainstorming ways to engage more African developers in the global AI space. I’ve always believed that AI is not just about technology—it’s about people. And in Africa, where we’re solving problems from agriculture to fintech, we need to ensure that developers here have the right tools, support, and voice in AI’s future.

🎤 Sharing AI Knowledge: A Fireside Chat on Responsible AI

In the afternoon, I had the chance to speak at a virtual event about responsible AI development. I shared insights on:

  • AI transparency and why developers should prioritize understanding how AI models make decisions.

  • The importance of African AI representation—who’s building the models? Who’s in the dataset?

  • Practical ways developers can integrate safety measures into their AI projects.

It’s moments like these that make DevRel so fulfillingbreaking down complex AI concepts, engaging with builders, and advocating for responsible AI development in ways that truly make an impact.

🌍 Wrapping Up: The Bigger Picture

As the day winds down, I take a step back to reflect. Why does this work matter so much to me?

Because AI is shaping the future. And if we don’t actively participate, shape, and advocate for responsible AI development—especially for Africa—others will do it for us.

This is why I do what I do.
This is why AI needs Africa just as much as Africa needs AI.

And tomorrow? We go again. 🚀✨

Hey there! I’m Joy Tari-Bagshaw, a passionate software developer with 3+ years of experience and a deep love for teaching and learning. As the first female Google Developers Student Club Lead at my university, I’ve mentored countless beginners, facilitated bootcamps, and helped aspiring developers land their first tech roles. After teaching at several bootcamps, I’ve realized the urgent need for this blog. The limited time frame of most programs often doesn’t allow for in-depth learning, and I wanted to create a space that simplifies complex topics while giving beginners the time and resources they need to truly grasp them.Every day, I get messages from people asking for advice on how to start or grow in tech. That’s why I’m on a mission to make web development simple and accessible for everyone through my blog series, Build, Break, Debug, Repeat. Whether you’re a total newbie or leveling up your skills, I’m here to guide you with resources, tutorials, and a sprinkle of humor along the way.Let’s build something amazing together!
