Cryptography is the practice of securing communication and information through the use of mathematical techniques. It ensures confidentiality, integrity, and authentication in digital interactions, preventing unauthorized access and data breaches.

Types of Cryptography

  1. Symmetric Cryptography: Also known as secret-key cryptography, this method uses the same key for both encryption and decryption. While it is efficient, securely sharing the key remains a challenge. Examples include AES and DES.

  2. Asymmetric Cryptography: Also called public-key cryptography, this approach uses a pair of keysβ€”a public key for encryption and a private key for decryption. It enhances security but requires more computational power. RSA and ECC are well-known examples.

  3. Hash Functions: These are one-way cryptographic functions that convert data into a fixed-length hash value. They ensure data integrity and are widely used in digital signatures and password storage. Common algorithms include SHA-256 and MD5.

  • Data Protection: Safeguards sensitive data in storage and during transmission.
  • Secure Communications: Ensures confidentiality in emails, messaging apps, and online transactions.
  • Digital Signatures: Authenticates documents and ensures non-repudiation.
  • Blockchain & Cryptocurrencies: Maintains decentralized, tamper-proof ledgers.
  • Authentication & Access Control: Strengthens user verification mechanisms in digital systems.

With the increasing threats to cybersecurity, cryptography plays a crucial role in protecting personal and organizational data. It forms the backbone of modern security protocols, such as SSL/TLS for web encryption and end-to-end encryption in messaging platforms.
