Parenting to Python

I’ve been a freelance editor for a decade. When it comes to being a stay-at-home, I’ve done that for a little more than four years. Granted, I have had the pleasure of doing more than just changing diapers, cooking, or cleaning. I was able to launch my herbalism business and see success from that, but at the end of the day, I have been a mom at home with her babies. That was until we lived in Africa for over a year.

We went through the financial trenches and lost our typical income. While my husband went into his provider mode of figuring out the next move, an opportunity came to me. I spoke with him about getting back into editing, and he agreed. I just had this gut inkling that it would lead me to something great, and it did. Not even a week went by, and I locked in an interview with a tech company needing an editor for work their prompt engineers were doing. This was a new world to me, but sadly, I couldn’t the role take since I wasn’t stateside. However, this put me on a hunt to find other jobs like it. Lo and behold they were! Many were on platforms and others were in salary positions. I sorted through what I had the qualifications for and voila! I landed a gig as a freelance prompt editor.

I remember how amazed I was with my first project. Learning tools such as Labelbox and working alongside data annotators showed me a side of the job market I wasn’t well versed in. It deeply intrigued me. Then, a project came to me that dealt with coding. I didn’t have a background in the languages, but being the learner I am, I tried my hand at it. (Coding is so nuanced!) It took a good week for me to grasp the rules, and when I did? It all began to click. I had never felt so achieved as an editor. Editing code properly was harder than developmental editing the novel of an author with chaotic writing. It also piqued my interest further in what possibilities are out there.

I’m 34. I’m a wife. I’m a mom. I haven’t had a “traditional” role in so long because a girl likes her freedom. Yet, here I am with a desire to transition into tech. I have a masters in psychology, so the human mind is at my core, which is why I nerd out over AI/ML and all things in that realm. It’s also the fact that I have children, I desire to be a keeper at the gate as we’re seeing some people use tech in a way that harms others from time to time. I have my eye on a boot camp, and my dreams are renewed at this moment. So, as I navigate this journey, I plan to keep documenting what I’m up to, how I feel, and my progress.

I hope you’re rooting for me.
