We all know the feeling: our homes are cluttered, drowning in stuff we don't use. But where do you even begin? The minimalism movement promises a life with less, but it can feel overwhelming. Don't worry, you don't need a weekend of intense sorting to make a difference.

One trick I've found incredibly helpful is the One-Touch Rule. It's simple, powerful, and can be woven into your daily routine.

Here's how it works:

The idea is that every item should have a designated spot AND be dealt with in that single touch.

  • Mail: Open it, sort it, take action immediately (file, toss, pay). Don't let it pile up on the counter.
  • Dishes: Wash them after use. Don't leave them to collect in the sink.
  • Clothes: Hang them up or put them directly into the laundry hamper. No need for a designated “clothes pile”.
  • Books/Magazines: Instead of stacking them up, put them back where they belong immediately after reading.

Why does this work?

  • Prevents clutter: By dealing with items in one go, you stop them from becoming part of your everyday chaos.
  • Makes decisions easier: It takes the pressure of tackling a huge pile later. You’re just dealing with one thing at a time.
  • Builds good habits: Over time, the One-Touch Rule becomes second nature. Your home stays tidier with less conscious effort.

It’s not about perfection, it’s about progress. If you accidentally slip up, don't beat yourself up! Just get back on track with your next piece of mail, dish, or garment. The more you practice, the easier it becomes.

This little shift can make a big difference in how you feel about your space. Give it a try for a week and see if you notice the difference!
