The Rise (and Rise) of Sourdough Everything: Bread Geek Nirvana or Fad?

You can't scroll through Instagram or TikTok without seeing a sourdough starter glistening in a jar, promising the fluffiest, tastiest loaf you've ever had. Sourdough bread, once a humble daily staple, is now a social media superstar, and its tangy goodness has spilled into every corner of the baking world.
But is this sourdough craze just a fleeting trend, or is it here to stay?
I've been baking for years, and I can tell you, there's something undeniably special about sourdough. That deep, complex flavor, the satisfying chew, and the pride of nurturing a living culture in your own kitchen – it's no wonder people are hooked.
But this resurgence goes beyond the bread itself. Sourdough pancakes, crackers, donuts, cookies, even pizza – the possibilities seem endless! Bakers are creatively incorporating the tangy sourdough discard, the leftover “waste” from the fermentation process, into all sorts of delicious treats.
But is it all hype?
Let's be honest, sourdough can be a bit fussy. Crafting the perfect loaf requires patience, precision, and a constant commitment to feeding your starter. It's not for everyone! For many, regular bread will always be the go-to, comfort food.
However, I believe sourdough's enduring popularity stems from both its unique flavor and its connection to tradition. Baking with a sourdough starter is a hands-on experience, a ritual that connects us to generations of bakers who relied on this simple yet magical process.
In a world increasingly dominated by instant gratification, sourdough stands as a testament to the beauty of slow, intentional food. So, is it a fad? Perhaps. But there's a good chance that sourdough, in all its tangy glory, will continue to rise for years to come.
