We all know recycling is important for the planet, but have you ever wondered what ACTUALLY happens to that cardboard box or plastic bottle after you toss it in the bin?

Turns out, the journey is pretty interesting, and sometimes a bit surprising.

Did you know that some recycled plastic ends up being used to make furniture, clothing, and even playground equipment? Yep, that water bottle you recycled could be contributing to a kid's fun day at the park! Others are transformed into things like park benches, fence posts, and even construction materials, proving that recycling can truly have a second life.

But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Over 10% of recyclable materials end up in landfills every year. This means a huge amount of perfectly good materials that could have been reused are ultimately buried, contributing to environmental problems.

So, what can you do? Here are a few tips to make sure your recyclables actually get recycled:

  • Check your local recycling guidelines. What can and can't be recycled varies from place to place.
  • Rinse out containers. Food residue can contaminate other materials and prevent them from being recycled.
  • Don't bag your recyclables. They need to be loose and easily identifiable.
  • Consider minimizing your consumption in the first place. The best way to reduce waste is to buy less stuff!

By understanding the journey of our recyclables and making mindful choices, we can all contribute to a more sustainable future. Remember, every little bit counts!
