Is Your Fitness Tracker a Secret Sleep Saboteur?

We're all obsessed with our fitness trackers these days. They track our steps, calories, heart rate, sleep… you name it! But do you ever stop to think if all that tracking is actually doing more harm than good?

Recent studies are throwing some shade (or should I say, blue light) on the impact of certain sleep track features.

Here's the deal: Many fitness trackers use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to monitor sleep stages. While this can be helpful for some, research suggests that the blue light emitted from these LEDs can disrupt melatonin production.

Melatonin is a hormone that helps regulate our natural sleep-wake cycle. When exposed to blue light, our brains think it's daytime, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Yikes, right?

So, does this mean everyone should ditch their fitness trackers at night? Not necessarily.

There are a few things you can do to minimize the potential sleep disruption:

  • Turn off the sleep tracking feature: If you're already struggling to sleep, do yourself a favour and turn off the lights on your tracker at night.
  • Use night mode: Some trackers offer a "night mode" that reduces or filters the blue light emitted.

  • Give yourself a digital detox before bed: Avoid screen time for at least an hour before bed, including your smartwatch.

Ultimately, listening to your body is key. If you notice you're having trouble sleeping at night, it might be time to take a closer look at your sleep habits and technology use. A good night's rest is essential for our health and well-being, so don't let your wearable tech become a sleep saboteur!
