Back from the Netherlands: Deep Sea Discoveries

Hey ocean friends! 🐠

Sorry for the long pause in posting — I was away exploring the beautiful Netherlands 🇳🇱 and soaking up all the coastal vibes. But guess what? My trip was full of amazing sea-inspired moments that I have to share with you!

So this blog is a little different — it’s all about the sea in the Netherlands, what makes it unique, and how this small country lives side-by-side with the ocean. I saw some amazing places, learned so much, and came back with a whole new appreciation for how the Dutch respect and work with the sea.

🌊 The North Sea: The Netherlands’ Wild Neighbor

The Netherlands borders the North Sea, a chilly, grey body of water that’s full of life and drama. It’s not tropical by any means — think wind, waves, and long stretches of sandy beaches — but it’s stunning in its own rugged way.

From kite surfers riding huge waves to seals lounging on sandbanks, the North Sea is buzzing with activity. I spent time walking along the beaches in places like Scheveningen and Zandvoort, where the air smelled salty and the wind was always playing with my hair. There’s something kind of magical about a beach that feels both wild and peaceful at the same time.

I also learned that the North Sea is super important for the Dutch economy — with busy ports like Rotterdam, wind farms out at sea, and fishing boats bringing in herring, mussels, and more.

🐚 The Wadden Sea: A UNESCO Wonder

One of the coolest marine ecosystems in the Netherlands is the Wadden Sea. It’s a shallow sea that stretches along the northern coast and becomes a giant mudflat during low tide.

What’s amazing:

  • You can walk across the sea floor at low tide (called "mudflat hiking") 🚶‍♀️🌊 —

  • It’s a hotspot for migrating birds, crabs, shellfish, and even porpoises

  • It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it’s so special and full of life

Walking across the Wadden Sea feels like stepping into another world. The landscape changes every hour with the tide. and you’re also able to collect edible seaweed and tiny shrimp!

🦭 Dutch Sea Life: Small but Mighty

While the Netherlands doesn’t have tropical coral reefs, it does have a surprising amount of marine life! Some of the animals I learned about include:

  • Harbor seals and grey seals 🦭 — especially near the Frisian Islands, where they chill on the sandbanks

  • Small sharks like the dogfish 🦈

  • Tons of mussels, oysters, and seaweed farms (Dutch seaweed is even used in food and cosmetics!)

  • Migratory birds like oystercatchers and sandpipers, feeding and nesting along the coast

if you’re interested maybe visit the seal rescue center in Pieterburen, where injured or orphaned seals are cared for until they’re healthy enough to go back to the sea. Watching them swim around their pools and get bottle-fed is a real highlight of a trip to the Netherlands!

🌍 Dutch Ocean Conservation

The Dutch are serious about protecting their coasts. Because much of the country is below sea level, they’ve built an amazing system of dikes, levees, and storm surge barriers — it’s like something out of a sci-fi movie!

But what I loved most was seeing how they’re working with nature too. Instead of just building concrete walls, they’re:

  • Restoring sand dunes and beaches to naturally break waves 🌾

  • Creating salt marshes that act like natural sponges for floodwater

  • Using floating buildings and urban wetlands in some cities to prepare for rising seas

They even have underwater cameras in harbors and estuaries where you can livestream marine life — I spent way too much time watching crabs crawl around and fish swim by.

💙 Back to the Ocean Diaries!

Now that I’m back, I can’t wait to dive into more ocean content with you all. I’ve got new ideas, stories, and sea creature features lined up — so thank you for being patient while I was off adventuring.

If you ever get the chance to visit the Netherlands, don’t skip the sea. It might not be tropical, but it’s magical in its own moody, muddy, and seal-filled way. Whether you’re standing on a windswept dike, sloshing through tidal flats, or watching a seal pup blink at you — you’ll feel the ocean’s power and beauty in a totally new way.

Until next time, keep swimming! 🐟
