Starting a Homelab

After watching a few videos about other's home lab and decided to start my own. To save cost I am using an old laptop that I have. Most likely you also have some old hardware around to turn into a home lab as well.

My home lab is running Ubuntu server. No GUI installed. I will use SSH to access the machine, and for now I installed Nginx and use SCP to upload new web content to it. I was going to use Docker and Kubernetes to manage my application, but felt like that would make it too complicated for now.

After getting Nginx installed and website loaded I configured my router's DNS to use a .lan domain name, since .lan is reserved for local networks. I first use .local, but that would not work with iPad. I discovered that Apple reserves .local for some of their services, so went with .lan.

Next up with my home lab configured SSL, and look into automating my deploys.
