Cleric Urges Muslims to Avoid TVK Chief Vijay

Fatwa Cautions Muslims Against TVK Leader Vijay's Political Influence
Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, the National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat (AIMJ), has issued a fatwa advising Muslims to distance themselves from TVK Chief Vijay, the leader of the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). The fatwa stems from the actor’s controversial portrayal of Muslims in his films, which Razvi claims has painted a misleading and damaging image of Islam.
Iftar Party Stirs Debate Within Muslim Community
The fatwa comes at a time when Vijay’s involvement in political events, including a recent Iftar party, has sparked heated discussions. Maulana Razvi specifically criticized the actor's actions, urging the Muslim community not to invite him to their Iftar gatherings or support any of his political endeavors. Razvi believes that Vijay’s past film roles, which he perceives as portraying Muslims as terrorists, are incompatible with the values of the Muslim community.
“I was approached by a Muslim individual from Chennai seeking a fatwa, and I have now issued this cautionary statement,” Razvi explained. “I’ve advised the Muslim community not to trust Vijay or extend any support to him, as his portrayal of Muslims in films is damaging to our image.”
TVK Leader’s Alleged Anti-Muslim Image
According to Razvi, Vijay’s recent participation in an Iftar party is not an authentic gesture of goodwill but rather an attempt to leverage the Muslim community’s religious practices for political gain. Despite his involvement in such events, the Maulana argues that Vijay’s overall image remains “anti-Muslim” due to the negative roles he has portrayed on screen.
“His political actions, including hosting an Iftar party, should not be confused with genuine respect for the Muslim community,” Razvi added. “It is critical that we recognize the broader context of his public persona and the impact it has on our community’s reputation.”
Rising Tensions Over Political and Cultural Engagement
This controversy is part of a broader debate surrounding the influence of media and politics in shaping public perceptions of Muslims. With Vijay’s involvement in Tamil Nadu politics, particularly through his Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam party, and his participation in religious events, the Muslim community faces difficult decisions regarding their interactions with the actor and his political party.
As the discussion continues to unfold, the fatwa and the subsequent media coverage are likely to fuel further tensions within both the Muslim community and the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, particularly concerning how political figures relate to religious communities.
