Tamil star-turned-politician and TVK leader Vijay is at the center of a growing storm as a fatwa has been issued against him, intensifying the Thalapathy Vijay Muslim controversy. The religious decree, announced by Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, condemns Vijay’s recent Iftar gathering and his past portrayals of Muslims in cinema.

The controversy revolves around the TVK leader Iftar party hosted on March 7 at Chennai’s YMCA Grounds, where thousands—including religious figures and political allies—were present. Initially hailed as a message of inclusion, the event later drew sharp criticism after it was alleged that individuals who consumed alcohol and gambled were among the attendees—acts deemed inappropriate during the holy month of Ramadan.

Maulana Razvi’s statement added fuel to the fire, accusing Vijay of exploiting Muslim sentiments for political mileage. “In his films like Beast, he has portrayed Muslims as terrorists. Now, in an attempt to gain votes, he’s organizing religious events while inviting individuals who disrespect Islamic traditions. This is the height of hypocrisy,” he said.

Labeling the event an insult to Islam, Razvi issued a fatwa advising Tamil Nadu’s Sunni Muslims to steer clear of TVK leader Vijay, urging them not to support or invite him to any religious function. He said the fatwa came after multiple requests from local Muslim communities disturbed by both Vijay’s film roles and the conduct at the TVK leader Iftar party.

The Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamaat backed the cleric’s stance, filing a complaint on March 11 with the Chennai Police. The group’s treasurer, Syed Kaus, claimed the gathering disrespected Ramadan’s sanctity and included people with no connection to fasting or faith.

Compounding his troubles, TVK leader Vijay is also pursuing a legal challenge in the Supreme Court against the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025, positioning him at the heart of both religious and political tensions.

As the Thalapathy Vijay Muslim controversy unfolds, the TVK leader Iftar party has become a lightning rod in his political rise, raising questions about sincerity, symbolism, and community trust.
