Essential Oils for Kids: What’s Safe & What to Avoid
As parents, we’re always looking for natural ways to soothe, calm, and care for our kids—and essential oils often seem like the perfect solution. But before you reach for that bottle of lavender or peppermint, it’s important to understand that what works for adults may not be safe for little ones.
In this blog, we’ll break down the safe ways to use essential oils for kids, the best oils to start with, and what to avoid completely.
🌿 Why Use Essential Oils for Children?
When used correctly, essential oils can offer gentle support for:
Sleep and relaxation
Minor skin irritations
Immune support
Focus and emotional regulation
The key is dilution, moderation, and choosing kid-safe oils.
✅ Kid-Safe Essential Oils (Ages 2+)
Here are some essential oils that are generally considered safe for children when properly diluted:
Lavender – Calming, great for sleep, anxiety, and minor skin irritations.
Chamomile (Roman) – Soothes tantrums, teething discomfort, and promotes better sleep.
Sweet Orange – Uplifting, helps with emotional balance and tension.
Frankincense – Gentle grounding oil, supportive for immune health and deep breathing.
Cedarwood – Encourages calm, focus, and better bedtime routines.
Tea Tree (Melaleuca) – Good for cuts and scrapes, but use with caution and lower dilution.
⚠️ Essential Oils to Avoid for Children
Not all oils are created equal when it comes to kids. Some can be too strong, irritating, or potentially toxic for young bodies. Avoid the following, especially under age 6:
Peppermint – Can cause breathing issues in young children.
Eucalyptus – Also risky for the respiratory system under age 10
Rosemary – Contains compounds that may affect the nervous system
Wintergreen – Can be toxic, especially when ingested or overused
Clove & Cinnamon – Too hot for sensitive skin and can irritate airways.
Oregano & Thyme – Very strong and potentially irritating.
🧴 How to Safely Use Essential Oils on Kids
Dilute Properly
Ages 2–6: 0.5% dilution (1 drop per 2 teaspoons carrier oil)
Ages 6–12: 1% dilution (1 drop per 1 teaspoon carrier oil)
Stick to Topical or Aromatic Use
Use in a diffuser for no more than 30–60 minutes at a time.
Apply diluted oils to soles of the feet, back, or chest—never near the face or eyes.
Patch Test First
- Try a small amount on the inside of your child’s arm and wait 24 hours to check for reactions.
Use in a Calm Environment
- Essential oils should enhance a soothing atmosphere, not overwhelm the senses.
💤 Kid-Friendly Blends to Try
Bedtime Calm Blend 1 drop Lavender + 1 drop Roman Chamomile in a diffuser
Focus & Homework Time 1 drop Cedarwood + 1 drop Sweet Orange (diffused or diluted for roll-on)
Immune Support Roll-On 1 drop Frankincense + 1 drop Tea Tree in 1 tablespoon carrier oil
👶 For Babies Under 2?
It's best to avoid essential oils for infants under 3 months completely. After that, some extremely gentle oils like lavender or chamomile can be used in very low dilution and only with guidance from a pediatrician or certified aromatherapist.
Final Thoughts: Nature, with Caution
Essential oils can be wonderful allies in your parenting toolkit—but they’re not risk-free. By choosing the right oils, using proper dilution, and avoiding known irritants, you can safely enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy with your kids.
As always, when in doubt, consult your child’s pediatrician or a certified aromatherapist before introducing new oils.
