Vijay's Political Outreach Criticized as AIMJ Issues Fatwa

In a significant development that blends entertainment, religion, and politics, a leading Muslim religious organization has issued a fatwa against Tamil actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay. The fatwa follows criticism over his alleged misrepresentation of the Muslim community in cinema and concerns over his recent Iftar event held in Chennai.
Religious Leader Cites Insensitivity Toward Muslim Sentiments
Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, President of the All India Muslim Jamaat (AIMJ), publicly declared a fatwa against Vijay on Wednesday. He claimed that the actor-turned-politician’s past film roles often cast Muslims in a negative light, linking them to terrorism and extremism. This, according to Razvi, has contributed to the spread of harmful stereotypes.
Further adding to the criticism was Vijay’s Iftar party, where Maulana Razvi alleged that individuals involved in un-Islamic activities such as alcohol consumption and gambling were present. He stated that this was deeply offensive during the holy month of Ramadan, which calls for spiritual reflection and strict adherence to religious conduct.
Community Urged to Withdraw Support
The fatwa urges Muslims in Tamil Nadu and beyond to refrain from attending any programs associated with Vijay or his political organization. The cleric claimed that Vijay’s attempts to align himself with the Muslim community are politically motivated and not grounded in genuine respect or understanding of the faith.
The Iftar Controversy
The Iftar party in question took place on March 8, 2025, at the YMCA Grounds in Chennai. Images and videos from the event showed Vijay wearing a traditional skull cap, participating in prayers, and breaking fast with attendees. While some praised the gesture, several Islamic organizations in Tamil Nadu criticized the execution of the event, claiming that it lacked religious integrity.
The Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath also filed a formal complaint with local police, expressing concern that the event disrespected the sanctity of Iftar and hurt community sentiments.
Political Implications for TVK
Vijay, who launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam as a political platform to contest future elections, is currently trying to build a voter base that spans communities. However, the fatwa and associated criticism could damage his credibility among Muslim voters.
The actor recently filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, further inserting himself into national-level religious and legal debates — a move seen by some as part of a broader political strategy.
