Tamil actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief, Thalapathy Vijay, has come under fire after a fatwa was issued against him by a leading Sunni Muslim body. The All India Muslim Jamaat’s president, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, announced the religious decree, accusing Vijay of insulting Islamic values both on-screen and off.

The controversy stems from an Iftar party hosted by Vijay in Chennai, where he reportedly invited individuals who were not observing Islamic practices, including alleged alcohol consumers and gamblers. The Maulana criticized the event, calling it disrespectful to the sanctity of Ramadan.

“While he tries to maintain friendly ties with Muslims in his political journey, he has portrayed Muslims as terrorists in films like ‘Beast’ and others. Now, inviting non-fasters and anti-social elements to a religious gathering is deeply offensive,” said Maulana Razvi.

The fatwa urges Muslims in Tamil Nadu to distance themselves from Vijay, stating that his actions have hurt religious sentiments. This comes at a time when Vijay is building momentum for his political future, having recently petitioned the Supreme Court to challenge the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.

TVK has yet to issue an official response to the fatwa, but party insiders claim the controversy is politically motivated.
