Why I Started Learning Web Development at 30

In my early 30s, I was a cook—good with a knife, terrible with a keyboard.

But after 10 years in the kitchen, something inside me started to shift. I wanted more stability. I wanted to work on things that had lasting impact. And honestly? I wanted to be home more—especially with a baby on the way.

That’s when I discovered web development.

I had no clue how to code. But after dipping my toes into freeCodeCamp’s Responsive Web Design course, I was hooked. I loved the logic, the creativity, and especially the potential to make websites better for everyone—including people with disabilities.

Since then, I’ve been investing time daily into learning, and I’ve enrolled in the Le Wagon Web Developer Bootcamp (starting October 2025). I’m especially interested in accessibility—because everyone deserves to use the web with ease and dignity.

This blog will be a space where I:

  • Share what I learn

  • Reflect on my challenges and wins

  • Explore topics like accessibility, freelancing, and ethical design

  • Connect with others on the same path

If you’re also learning to code or considering a career change, I hope this space feels like a warm campfire on your journey. You’re not too old. It’s not too late. You got this.

Let’s grow together. 🌱

Hi! I’m a self-taught web developer currently based in the Netherlands. After working as a cook for over a decade, I decided to change paths and dive into tech. I'm passionate about accessibility, ethical design, and building inclusive websites. I’ve completed the Responsive Web Design certification from freeCodeCamp and I’m currently preparing for the Le Wagon Web Development Bootcamp starting in October 2025. I’m documenting my journey from zero to developer to stay accountable, share what I learn, and connect with others who are learning too—especially if you’re coming from a non-traditional background like me. Outside of tech, I love gardening, spending time in nature, and dreaming of a peaceful village life with my own house and garden someday. Thanks for following along! 🌱
