Selling My Ring, Chasing a Dream: My Risky Move to Singapore

When my anxiety was at its worst, I made a huge decision that changed everything. I left my home country, Myanmar, and took a big leap into the unknown by moving to Singapore.

I've always been quick to make decisions. When I realized I wasn't moving forward, I gave myself just a month to come up with a plan. While applying for digital marketing jobs from afar, I got a lot of rejections. That's when I know that I couldn't just sit around waiting for an opportunity. I had to go there in person and fight for it.

I Sold My Rings to Buy a Chance

With no job lined up and no backup plan, I reached out to a recruitment agency and picked a retail job I thought I could handle. To cover the agency fees, I sold my ring which I used to think was valuable, but not as valuable as the future I was aiming for.

I used my severance pay from my old agency in Yangon to cover the rest. It wasn't just cash . It was everything I had left..

The Three Interviews That Changed Everything

Before I even got to Singapore, I had already passed two interview rounds online. The final in-person interview was set for right after I landed.

My flight landed at 12:30 PM, and the interview was at 1:30 PM. With my luggage still with me, I dashed to the company. I was exhausted, nervous, and not in top form. I have no idea what the interviewers thought of me, but I tried my best to stay calm and be honest.

That night, I couldn't sleep. I kept replaying every word and every glance in my head. Then, the next day I got the good news. I passed. The company agreed to apply for my work permit.

A Twist of Fate

But life isn't always smooth sailing. My first work pass application got rejected by the government. There was nothing I could do ,no appeal, no explanation.

It crushed me. I had already left everything behind, and now it felt like the door was slammed shut.

But then, something I still can't quite wrap my head around happened. The company reapplied for me. And this time it was approved.

I’m not sure who to thank: my persistence, the company’s support, or just plain luck. Probably all three.

A New Chapter Begins

That's how my new life in Singapore started. Not with a dream job or a perfect plan, but with determination, taking risks, and believing in something better. I might have sold my rings, but I got something way more valuable—a chance.
