Bridging the Gap: How Physics Led Me to Data Science

My Journey from Physics to Data Science
Hi!
I’m Farsana, a recent Physics graduate who found her passion in data science. This is the beginning of my blogging journey, where I’ll be sharing tutorials, reflections, and tips from my learning experience. If you’re someone switching fields or starting out in tech, I hope this blog becomes a useful companion for you.
From Physics to Python
During my undergraduate studies in Physics at the University of Calicut, I was always curious about patterns, logic, and how things worked beneath the surface. While I enjoyed learning about the physical world—especially during my project on optical fiber—I slowly became interested in how data could also tell stories and reveal hidden truths.
That curiosity led me to explore programming and eventually data science.
Why Data Science?
I was fascinated by how data science brings together problem-solving, creativity, and logic. The ability to derive insights, make predictions, and build intelligent systems felt like a perfect blend of what I loved in Physics—with a tech twist.
So, I decided to pursue a data science course and began diving deep into this world.
What I’ve Learned So Far
Over the past months, I’ve learned and practiced:
Python for data analysis and scripting
Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib , and Seaborn for handling and visualizing data
SQL for database querying
Scikit-learn for machine learning
OpenCV and Web scraping
Power BI, Tableau, and Excel for dashboard creation and reporting
I'm also currently learning Flask to build web apps with Python and exploring how to turn data projects into real-world applications.
My Projects and Internship
One of my key projects was working with the Adult Income Dataset, where I built a machine learning model to predict whether a person earns more than $50K a year. I deployed the project using Streamlit, which was a huge step for me in combining code with user-friendly interfaces.
I am currently pursuing an internship at Techolas Technologies, where I’m gaining hands-on experience and working on data-driven tasks as part of a team. This internship has been a valuable step in applying my skills in real-world scenarios.
What’s Next?
Right now, I’m focused on:
Learning Flask and deployment techniques
Improving my machine learning skills
Starting my freelancing journey on Upwork
And one day, reaching my goal of becoming a Senior Data Scientist, In Shaa Allah
A Note to Beginners
If you’re switching fields or just starting out, don’t let self-doubt stop you. It’s okay to start small. Take one concept at a time, practice a lot, and don’t be afraid to build and share your work. You don’t need a computer science degree to succeed—you just need consistency and passion.
Thanks for reading!
Stay tuned for more posts where I’ll be sharing beginner-friendly data science tutorials, Python tips, and reflections from my journey.
