FIRST - Read more about First here. The core values FIRST believes in says it all about them. Love what they do !

They have 3 main STEM programs for the kids to participate and learn by doing.

  1. First Lego League

  2. First Tech Challenge

  3. First Robotics Competition

My LOVE with Lego and Teaching got me interested to look into “First Lego League”. FLL (First Lego League) is further divided into 3 divisions, mostly based on the age group. The complexity and the objectives for the kids to achive changes based on these divisions. The following are the divisions within FLL.

💡

FLL Divisions, as shown above they have

  1. FLL Discover (PreK to 1st grade)

  2. FLL Explore (2nd grade to 4th grade)

  3. FLL Challenge (4th grade to 8th grade)

The grade divisions are a suggestion and if you think your kid can fit in #2 division vs #1 division, please go for it. You will love it and the kid will enjoy it as well.

FLL Explore

Easy.. You register at the FLL Website and once done, you will get a box full of Themed Lego, Project Mat, Instructions, 6 Student Notebooks, 1 Project Book for the team lead. This Lego pieces and the mat are related to the season theme. This seasons theme is “Submerged”.

Students use their Notebook across the season to gather notes and information.

More information about how to start your own Team can be found here at the FLL website.

💡
Along with the Themed Lego Pieces, Notebooks etc that we get after succesful Team Registration, we also need a Lego Spike Essential or Lego Spike Prime set (or both, if you are excited and want to do more).

Our Team - CreaSea Bots

Name of the Team, the Logo for the team is conceptualized, designed by the kids. I am jealous of their talent. I admire them a lot…

This season I have a wonderful team of 6 enthusiastic kids, from 4th, 3rd and 1st grade students. We met once every week for an 1.5 hrs.

Our overall approach very briefly :

  • For about 2-3 very first sessions I decided that the team needs to know each other and learn about the strengths and what each other team member likes and dislikes.

  • I gave them a big box of Lego pieces that I have and asked them to do two free builds. One with their own imagination and the other one with a theme (Submerged).

  • Now that I have an idea on what each kid can do, I tried to develop those skills and also spend more time with the other kids to get them upto speed.

  • Next session, I asked them to come up with a name for the team, and design a logo. The kids are very talented. CreaSea Bots (Like Crazy Bots for the name) and the logo can be seen above.

  • In the following sessions, I asked them to look into the building instructions that were provided by FLL to finish the builds, Like coral reefs, under water wrecks etc and a Submarine.
