Hotel Safety Boost: AHLA Unveils 2025 Lithium Battery Fire Prevention Toolkit

The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) and Hospitality Technology Next Generation (HTNG) have introduced a comprehensive safety toolkit in 2025 to address the escalating risk of lithium battery fires in hotels. This initiative responds to the increasing use of lithium-based batteries in devices such as e-bikes, laptops, and mobile phones, which have led to a rise in fire incidents, particularly from micro-mobility devices like e-scooters and e-bikes. Data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System indicates that over 50% of lithium-related hotel fire incidents between 2020 and 2024 involved these devices.
Toolkit Components:
Best practices guide for charging and disposal of lithium-based batteries
Executive summary overview of best practices
Industry-facing briefing video highlighting safety risks and hotel response strategies
Key card insert template for guest education
Emergency response checklist for hotel staff
Printable Safe Stay one-pager for easy distribution
Developed through collaboration with over 25 hoteliers, vendors, and subject matter experts, the toolkit aims to provide practical, hotel-focused guidance on managing lithium battery safety. AHLA encourages its members to adopt safe handling protocols, including temperature regulation, on-site monitoring, proper storage, and staff training on emergency response procedures.
