Pahalgam Terror Attack: Border Firings Escalate, PM Modi Chairs High-Level Security Review

On April 22nd there was a horrific terror attack at Pahalgam, J & K which left 26 people dead- majority being tourists. The vicious attack has considerably increased the tensions between India and Pakistan, contributing to an inflamed atmosphere with finger pointing.
The deadliest incident to hit civilians in Kashmir in recent years, the attack garnered condemnation across the board and sharpened the focus on cross-border terrorism. Security agencies have claimed that around 10-12 people were plotting the attack and were allegedly linked to a Pakistan-based militant group.
Cross Border Firings Intensified
Since the Pahalgam massacre, the security environment on the India-Pakistan side of Kashmir has deteriorated noticeably. Reports said that Pakistani forces opened unprovoked firing across the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pargawal. It is an enormous step beyond the traditional ceasefire violations which have marked the Line of Control (LoC). Across the LoC & International Border, as per reports, cross border firings in Pakistan have now been maintained for the 6th straight day in several sectors including Nowshera, Sunderbani, Akhnoor and Baramulla (both LOPs) & Kupwara.
The Indian Army said it responded quickly and in kind to such recurring provocations. It is this long spell of ratcheted up border hostilities, the extent of which speaks to the acute strain which bilateral ties have reached ever since the terrorist attack.
