How I Started My Cybersecurity Journey as a Student (With No Experience)

🚀 Introduction

Hi, I'm an aspiring cybersecurity student currently pursuing my BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications). Like many beginners, I started my journey with zero technical background. No prior experience. No fancy degrees. Just curiosity, motivation, and a strong dream — to one day become a professional penetration tester and work at a top company like Amazon.

In this blog, I’ll share exactly how I got started, what I’m learning, and how you can do it too — even if you're starting from scratch.

🛡️ Why Cybersecurity?

The idea of ethical hacking caught my attention early. I love the idea of thinking like an attacker to protect systems. The thrill of solving puzzles, understanding systems deeply, and defending against threats — that’s what drove me toward cybersecurity.

Also, let’s be honest — the dream of owning a Bugatti someday definitely helps keep me motivated 😄.

🧠 How I Got Started

Here’s exactly how I took my first steps:

  • 🔐 Created a TryHackMe account
I began with rooms like “Introduction to Cyber Security” and “Terminaled.” These rooms helped me understand the basics without feeling overwhelmed.

  • 💻 Started learning Linux
Tools like Kali Linux, Ubuntu, and command-line basics are essential for ethical hackers. I started with the free "Linux Basics for Hackers" path.

  • 🌐 Learned networking
I started watching YouTube tutorials on basic networking — things like IP, DNS, ports, protocols. David Bombal and NetworkChuck made complex topics easy to follow.

  • ✍️ Created Twitter, Instagram & this blog
To stay consistent and document my journey, I created social media accounts and this blog. It keeps me accountable, and I get to help others too.

🧰 Tools & Platforms I Use

  • TryHackMe – My favorite platform for hands-on hacking labs

  • Kali Linux / Ubuntu – For terminal and hacking tools

  • YouTube Channels – NetworkChuck, David Bombal

  • Books – "Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach"

🔥 What’s Next?

My next goals:

  • Learn web application security (SQL injection, XSS, etc.)

  • Complete more rooms on TryHackMe

  • Earn beginner certifications like CompTIA Security+ (free resources first)

  • Apply for internships, participate in CTFs, and grow my skills

💡 Advice for Other Beginners

  • Don’t wait to be “ready” — start now, even if it’s just 10 minutes a day.

  • Learn Linux + Networking early — they’re the foundations.

  • Share your journey online. It helps you stay consistent and inspires others.

  • Ask questions. Google is your best friend.

  • Don’t compare your Day 1 with someone else’s Day 100.

📌 Final Thoughts

I’m still at the beginning of my journey, but I’ve already learned so much — and I’m just getting started. If you’re also learning cybersecurity, follow along. Let’s grow together.

Feel free to reach out on Twitter or Instagram — I love connecting with other learners!
