On May 4, 2025, the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala hosted a thrilling encounter between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 54th match of the TATA IPL 2025. Punjab Kings delivered a commanding performance, securing a 37-run victory and climbing to second place in the points table with 15 points, while LSG slipped to seventh with 10 points.

LSG captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and elected to bowl first, hoping to exploit early seam movement on the Dharamsala pitch. However, PBKS openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya set the tone early, though Arya fell for 1 in the first over. Prabhsimran, unfazed, unleashed a blistering 48-ball 91, including a 78-run stand with captain Shreyas Iyer, who contributed a steady 45. Nehal Wadhera (16), Shashank Singh (33), and Marcus Stoinis (15) provided crucial cameos, propelling PBKS to an imposing 236/5 in 20 overs. LSG’s bowlers struggled, with Digvesh Singh Rathi and Prince Yadav taking key wickets but unable to stem the run flow.

Chasing 237, LSG faced immediate pressure as Arshdeep Singh struck early, dismissing Mitchell Marsh (0) and Aiden Markram (13) in the same over. Nicholas Pooran (0) fell soon after, trapped by Arshdeep, leaving LSG reeling at 27/3. Pant’s struggles continued, managing only a brief cameo before holing out to Azmatullah Omarzai for a low score, extending his poor IPL 2025 form. David Miller’s dismissal further dented LSG’s hopes at 73/5. Ayush Badoni fought valiantly, scoring a 40-ball 74, and shared an 81-run stand with Abdul Samad (45). However, their efforts were in vain as wickets tumbled, with Badoni falling to Yuzvendra Chahal in the final over. LSG finished at 199/7, falling short despite late fireworks from Avesh Khan (19*).

Arshdeep Singh was the standout bowler for PBKS, finishing with 3/16, while Omarzai chipped in with 2/33. Chahal, though expensive, claimed the crucial wicket of Badoni. For LSG, the loss highlighted their batting frailties, particularly Pant’s inability to anchor the innings, raising concerns about his leadership and form.

Prabhsimran Singh earned the Player of the Match award for his explosive knock, which set the foundation for PBKS’s dominance. Shreyas Iyer praised his team’s execution, emphasizing their focus on winning without overthinking statistics. Pant, meanwhile, admitted the target was “definitely too many runs,” reflecting LSG’s struggles to adapt.

The match underscored PBKS’s playoff credentials, with their aggressive batting and disciplined bowling proving too much for LSG. As the IPL 2025 playoff race intensifies, PBKS’s performance in Dharamsala signals their intent to end their playoff drought since 2014, while LSG must regroup to salvage their campaign.
