Hyderabad Student Loses ₹1 Lakh in Online Investment Scam

A 19-year-old student from Hyderabad has become the latest victim of a growing online investment scam, losing over ₹1 lakh after being tricked into a fraudulent commission-based earnings scheme linked to an e-commerce platform.
The scam began when the victim received an unsolicited message on Instagram, offering an opportunity for earnings through online investments. After initial contact on Instagram, the victim was directed to continue the conversation via WhatsApp with an international phone number. The scammers then led the student to a Telegram group, followed by a website that was designed to mimic the appearance of a legitimate e-commerce platform.
The student, enticed by the seemingly professional setup and the promise of substantial earnings, proceeded to invest money into the scheme. However, after transferring a significant sum, the victim realized that the platform was fake and the funds were lost.
A cyber crime officer investigating the case confirmed the involvement of international scam operators, warning others to be cautious about online investment opportunities that promise high returns with minimal effort. Authorities are now working to trace the scammers behind the operation.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the rising trend of online frauds, especially on social media platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp, where scammers prey on unsuspecting individuals.
Cybersecurity experts advise individuals to be cautious of unsolicited offers, verify any investment platforms before transferring money, and report suspicious activity to authorities promptly.
