What is an LLM Agent?

Date: 2025-02-12
LLM agents are AI systems that surpass traditional large language models (LLMs) by autonomously making decisions and executing tasks. Unlike passive LLMs, they interact with external systems, perform multi-step workflows, and dynamically adapt. This is achieved through reasoning frameworks, tools, and APIs, enabling applications like customer service automation and data analysis. While offering advantages in automation and efficiency, LLM agents also present challenges such as computational cost. They differ from retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems in their ability to actively take actions.
