The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a heavy rain alert for several districts across Tamil Nadu, as the southwest monsoon is expected to set in early over the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The wet weather is predicted to continue until May 13, bringing much-needed relief to some areas while potentially disrupting daily life in others.

Widespread Rainfall Predicted

According to RMC forecasts, multiple regions in Tamil Nadu are set to experience heavy rainfall in the coming days. In Chennai, moderate showers are expected to persist, while isolated locations across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may see light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging between 30 to 40 kmph.

Districts on Alert

Specific districts under heavy rain warning include:

  • Pudukkottai

  • Sivaganga

  • Tiruchirappalli

  • Thanjavur

  • Ariyalur

  • Perambalur

  • Cuddalore

  • Kallakurichi

  • Nilgiris

  • Hilly regions of Coimbatore, Theni, and Dindigul

These areas are likely to witness intense showers that may cause waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and possible damage to standing crops and infrastructure in low-lying zones.

Heat Persists Despite Rain

Despite the incoming rains, certain regions of Tamil Nadu continue to face scorching temperatures. On Wednesday, Vellore registered the state’s highest maximum temperature at 41°C. Weather officials have warned of a further rise in mercury levels on Thursday, with increasing humidity likely to cause additional discomfort, particularly in interior districts.

Here’s a breakdown of expected temperature ranges:

  • Interior Tamil Nadu: 36°C to 41°C

  • Coastal regions: 34°C to 36°C

  • Hilly areas: 22°C to 28°C

Advisory for Residents

Residents are advised to:

  • Stay indoors during heavy rain and thunderstorms

  • Avoid waterlogged areas

  • Secure loose outdoor items due to gusty winds

  • Stay hydrated and minimize outdoor activities during peak heat hours

With the dual challenge of heat and rainfall, authorities are urging the public to take all necessary precautions and stay updated with the latest weather alerts.
