Fighting Creative Block: I build a simple Art Prompt Generator for artists like me

I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember — pencil sketching, digital doodling, and everything in between. But like most artists, I’ve also had long moments of creative block. You sit down to draw, and nothing comes to mind.

That’s what inspired me to create something simple but useful:

The Art Prompt Generator (https://mtg-art.github.io/Art-Prompt-Generator/) — a free tool that gives you fun, quirky, or even poetic drawing prompts at the click of a button.

Why I Made It

There were times I wanted to draw but didn’t know where to start. Other times, I’d just scroll through Pinterest or Instagram hoping for inspiration. I thought:

“What if I could build something that gives instant, fresh ideas in seconds?”

So I learned how to make a basic website and started putting it together.

What It Does

Each time you press the button, it randomly generates prompts. Some are surreal, some are silly — but that’s the point. They push you out of the blank page mindset.

Who It's For

Whether you're an art student, hobbyist, or someone who just likes to sketch during breaks, this tool is for you.

It's mobile-friendly, doesn’t require sign-in, and works in any browser.

What I Learned

Creating something from scratch — designing the prompt logic, choosing the aesthetics, testing it across devices — taught me a lot about both creativity and problem-solving.

And every time someone uses it and shares their artwork, I feel like I’ve added a little value to someone’s creative day.

Progress

As of now (May 2025), it’s been used by 85+ people from 10+ countries, and I’m just getting started.

Try It Out

You can check it out here:

If it helps you create even one piece you’re proud of, that’s more than enough for me.
