Leo Club and NYMAT Complete Vital Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Program

The Leo Club of Kathmandu Himalayas Patan, in collaboration with the Nepal Youth Medics Association Team (NYMAT), has successfully concluded Phase 2 of their groundbreaking initiative: "Youth Engagement in Awareness of Antibiotics use and Antimicrobial Resistance (YoE-AMR)." This health literacy program represents a significant advancement in addressing one of the most pressing yet underrecognized public health challenges facing Nepal today.
Tackling a Silent Health Crisis
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve over time and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death. In Nepal, where antibiotics are often available without prescription, the problem has reached concerning levels.
"Many people don't realize that using antibiotics inappropriately not only affects their personal health but contributes to a larger public health crisis," explained a Leo Club representative. "Through this program, we aimed to make this complex issue understandable and relevant to young people's everyday lives."
Interactive Learning Approach
The YoE-AMR program distinguished itself through its emphasis on two-way conversation and interactive learning. Rather than traditional lecture formats, facilitators created engaging discussions where participants could share their experiences, ask questions, and gain practical knowledge about responsible medication practices.
Sessions covered crucial topics including:
The difference between bacterial and viral infections
Why antibiotics don't work against viruses
Dangers of self-medication and incomplete antibiotic courses
How antimicrobial resistance develops and spreads
Practical steps for responsible antibiotic use
The global and local impact of AMR on healthcare systems
"We wanted participants to leave with more than just facts—we wanted them to understand how their personal choices about medication impact both their own health and the broader community," noted a program coordinator.
Expert Guidance and Mentorship
The program's success was significantly enhanced by the expertise and dedication of Alena Oli, whose in-depth knowledge of antimicrobial resistance provided participants with credible, science-based information while remaining accessible to non-medical audiences.
"Alena's ability to translate complex medical concepts into everyday language was remarkable," shared a Leo Club member. "She created an environment where participants felt comfortable asking questions, which led to much deeper understanding and engagement with the topic."
Her mentorship extended beyond formal sessions, as she worked closely with the organizing team to develop resources that participants could share with their families and communities, creating a ripple effect of awareness beyond the program itself.
Youth-Led Health Advocacy
What made the YoE-AMR initiative particularly effective was its youth-led approach, with Leo Club members taking leadership roles in program design, coordination, and facilitation alongside NYMAT's medical expertise.
"When young people lead conversations about public health, it resonates differently with their peers," observed a program organizer. "Participants could relate to the messengers, which made them more receptive to the message itself."
This peer-to-peer model created a comfortable environment for discussing health topics and empowered youth to become advocates for responsible antibiotic use within their own social circles.
Community Impact and Participant Empowerment
Feedback from participants highlighted the program's practical impact on their daily health decisions:
"Before this program, I didn't think twice about taking leftover antibiotics when I felt sick," admitted one participant. "Now I understand why that's dangerous both for me and for public health."
Another shared: "I've already had conversations with my family about what I learned, especially about finishing the full course of antibiotics even when symptoms improve. These are simple changes that can make a big difference."
Looking Forward: The Next Phase
The conclusion of Phase 2 marks not an endpoint but a stepping stone in the ongoing effort to combat antimicrobial resistance in Nepal. The Leo Club of Kathmandu Himalayas Patan and NYMAT are already developing plans for Phase 3, which will expand the program's reach to more communities and integrate new interactive elements based on feedback from previous participants.
"Each phase of this program builds on what we've learned and allows us to reach more people with this critical information," explained a Leo Club officer. "Our ultimate goal is to create a generation of young Nepalis who understand antimicrobial resistance and make responsible decisions about antibiotic use."
The Power of Partnership
The collaboration between Leo Club of Kathmandu Himalayas Patan and NYMAT exemplifies how youth service organizations and specialized professional groups can combine their strengths to address complex community challenges.
"This partnership brought together Leo Club's community engagement experience and NYMAT's medical expertise," noted a program leader. "Neither organization could have achieved this impact working alone."
This model of cross-sector collaboration offers valuable lessons for addressing other public health challenges facing Nepal's communities.
