Preventing Through Screening: Diabetes Awareness in Action

In the early morning hours of November 26, 2023, a powerful example of youth-led community health service unfolded at निःसहाय सेवा सदन (Nissahaya Sewa Sadan). Beginning at 6:45 AM, the Leo Club of Kathmandu Himalayas Patan and Leo Club of Kathmandu Manasalu joined forces to conduct a comprehensive "Diabetes Screening Program" for the residents of this care facility. This initiative represented not just a health check-up but a crucial intervention for a vulnerable population who might otherwise lack access to preventive healthcare services.

Diabetes remains a growing public health concern in Nepal, with many cases going undiagnosed until complications arise. This screening program directly addressed this gap by bringing diagnostic capabilities directly to individuals who face multiple barriers to accessing regular healthcare. By focusing on early detection, the Leo Clubs demonstrated their understanding of the critical importance of preventive health measures in communities with limited resources.

Comprehensive Care Through Collaboration

The program's success stemmed from its well-coordinated approach that combined medical expertise with compassionate service. Participants received comprehensive screenings that included blood glucose testing, blood pressure measurements, and basic health assessments. Beyond the clinical aspects, Leo members provided vital education about diabetes risk factors, symptoms, management strategies, and the importance of regular monitoring.

This holistic approach ensured that participants not only learned their current health status but also gained valuable knowledge to make informed decisions about their health moving forward. For many residents of Nissahaya Sewa Sadan, this represented a rare opportunity to receive personalized health guidance and attention.

Distinguished Support and Leadership

The program was honored by the presence of Past President Vishwa Malla from the Lions Club of Kathmandu Manasalu, whose participation highlighted the enduring mentor-mentee relationship between Lions and Leo clubs. Additionally, Leo District 325 R Nepal District Tamer Leo Dipesh Tikhatri's active involvement demonstrated district-level support for local club initiatives. These leaders didn't simply attend as observers but actively participated in the screening activities, setting a powerful example of service leadership.

Behind the scenes, the program's seamless execution was made possible through the dedicated coordination efforts of Leo Diwash Pant, Leo Abhinav Dahal, and Leo Samikshya Ghimire. Their meticulous planning, from arranging the medical professionals and necessary equipment to organizing the screening flow and follow-up procedures, ensured that every participant received proper care and attention throughout the process.

Impact Beyond Numbers

While the screening program provided immediate health benefits through testing and education, its impact extended far beyond the day's activities. For residents of Nissahaya Sewa Sadan, many of whom may feel overlooked by society, the program communicated a powerful message: they matter, their health matters, and there are young people in their community who care deeply about their wellbeing.

Moreover, the program created valuable learning opportunities for participating Leo members. Through direct involvement in community health service, these young leaders gained practical experience in healthcare delivery, project management, and working with vulnerable populations. These skills and experiences contribute to their development as informed, compassionate citizens prepared to address community needs through service.

A Model for Continued Health Service

The success of this diabetes screening program establishes a replicable model for future health-related service initiatives. By documenting effective approaches and building relationships with healthcare providers, the Leo Clubs have created a foundation for ongoing health service activities that can address various community health needs.

This collaborative effort between two Leo Clubs also illustrates how pooling resources and expertise can maximize impact. Rather than working in isolation, the clubs demonstrated that partnership amplifies their ability to serve effectively, reaching more people with higher quality services than might be possible individually.

As diabetes continues to affect an increasing number of Nepalis, grassroots screening and awareness programs like this one play a vital role in the broader public health response. By continuing to prioritize health-focused service projects, Leo Clubs contribute meaningfully to building healthier communities while embodying their motto of Leadership, Experience, and Opportunity through service.

The Leo Club of Kathmandu Himalayas Patan extends heartfelt appreciation to all Leo members who participated, whose dedication and enthusiasm brought the program to life and exemplified the true spirit of Leo service.
