The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory predicting widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu through May 18, 2025, due to an active cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD, this upper air cyclonic system is influencing weather conditions in north coastal Tamil Nadu and its surrounding regions. As a result, multiple districts, including Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Salem, and Thanjavur, are expected to experience intense spells of rain over the coming days.

In Chennai and nearby districts, residents can expect light showers under partly cloudy skies, with daytime temperatures likely to remain below 38°C. Though rainfall in the city may be lighter compared to interior districts, humidity levels are expected to remain high.

The weather department has also stated that from May 19 to May 21, isolated areas in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may witness moderate rainfall, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. This may disrupt daily routines in some regions, especially in rural and low-lying areas.

Meteorologists indicate that if the current weather system intensifies, it could evolve into a low-pressure area, increasing the likelihood of more significant rainfall. Furthermore, the expected early arrival of the southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and nearby Bay of Bengal regions could influence the pace and intensity of rain across southern India.

Coastal districts may also witness changes in sea breeze patterns, leading to a further shift in local weather. Authorities have urged residents, especially in vulnerable and flood-prone areas, to stay alert and follow updates from official channels.
