Rann of Kutch: A Journey Through India’s White Desert

I always thought deserts were just hot and dry. But the moment I stepped into the Rann of Kutch, I realized — this place isn’t just a desert, it’s a dream. It’s white, wide, peaceful, and has a rhythm of its own.

🧳 Arrival in Rann of Kutch — Dry Air, Warm Welcome

I landed in Bhuj, and from there, it was a scenic drive to Dhordo, the main village near the salt desert. On the way, I passed colorful mud houses, small tea stalls, and locals dressed in beautiful traditional outfits. My first thought? “This place looks like it came straight out of a painting.”

The air was dry, but the people were warm. Everyone from the tea vendor to the local shop auntie greeted me with a smile. And even though it was a bit hot during the day, the evening breeze made it feel magical.

🏜️ Where I Went — It’s Not Just White Salt!

  • The White Rann: I went during the evening. The sunset turning the white salt pink-orange was something I’ll never forget. It honestly felt like walking on the moon.

  • Rann Utsav: This festival is a full vibe. Folk music, puppet shows, traditional dances, camel rides, and shopping — I felt like a kid again.
  • Kalo Dungar (Black Hill): The highest point in Kutch. The view of the Rann from here? Worth every bump on the road.

Local Handicraft Villages: I stopped by Hodka and Nirona villages to see how they make rogan art, bell crafts, and embroidery — truly impressive!

🍛 Food in Rann of Kutch — Hot, Simple & Full of Flavour

Food in this part of Gujarat is basic but super satisfying:

Bajra Rotla with ghee, jaggery and garlic chutney — finger-licking good.

Khichdi-Kadhi-Papad — comfort food at its best.

Kutchi Dabeli — a spicy bun sandwich that’s now one of my favourites.

Oh, and don’t miss their masala chai made on woodfire — especially in the cold desert evenings.

️ How I Found My Stay — Thank You CheQin.ai!

Now here’s the best part — I didn’t book my stay in advance.

I simply opened CheQin.ai, added my requirements:

“Near Rann Utsav, clean washroom, warm blankets, and local food if possible.”

I got 5 hotel/homestay offers sent to me directly — all competing to give me the best price. No calls, no drama.

I picked a cute Bhungas-style hut stay — traditional from outside, comfortable inside, with a hearty breakfast included.

👪 Culture & People — So Much Colour, So Much Kindness

People in Kutch are proud of their roots. Everywhere I went, I saw bright clothes, smiling faces, and music in the air. The locals are simple, honest, and love sharing their traditions. I even joined a small garba circle near the Rann — completely unplanned, but unforgettable.

✅ Tips for First-Time Rann Visitors:

— Go between November to February — for Rann Utsav and good weather.

— Carry layers — warm in the day, freezing at night.

— Visit during full moon — trust me, the white desert glows.

— Try village food stalls — they’re tastier and cheaper than fancy places.

 — Use CheQin.ai instead of random booking apps. It’s faster, fairer, and shows real-time offers.

💬 Final Thoughts — Rann Gave Me Peace (and a Tan!)

Rann of Kutch isn’t just a place — it’s a feeling. It’s about simplicity, smiles, and silences that feel full. I came back with a mind full of sunsets, a phone full of photos, and a heart full of peace.

And honestly, CheQin.ai made it all smooth. I didn’t waste time scrolling or comparing. I just posted what I needed, saw the best offers, and chose what felt right.

So if you ever want to walk on salt, dance under the stars, and eat ghee-filled rotla with strangers who feel like family — Rann of Kutch is waiting.
