What does “Build with AI” mean?

When people say “Build with AI”, they usually mean:

“Integrating artificial intelligence technologies into the development of software, apps, or products to enhance functionality, automate tasks, or create intelligent behavior.”

What exactly does all that 👆 mean?

Let’s break that down:

  1. Adding AI Features to Products

You build apps or tools that use AI models (like ChatGPT, image generation, or recommendation systems) to do things like:

  • Natural language processing (chatbots, summarization, translation)

  • Image recognition or generation

  • Predictive analytics

  • Personalized recommendations

  1. Using AI to Help you Build

You use AI tools to assist in the creation process, such as:

  • Code generation and debugging (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT)

  • Generating UI designs or mockups

  • Writing documentation or content

  • Planning project architecture

  1. Creating New AI-Powered Products

You build an entire application around AI, for example:

  • An AI writing assistant

  • A game with smart NPCs driven by LLMs

  • A tool that analyzes data with AI to give insights

Great! Now what does it mean when they say “Build your first app with AI”?

“Build your first app with AI” would usually mean:

“Create a simple application (like a website, mobile app, or desktop tool) that uses artificial intelligence to do something smart or helpful.”

It’s aimed at beginners and emphasizes that you don’t need to be an AI expert to get started. You’ll typically be using existing AI services (like OpenAI, Hugging Face, or Google AI tools) rather than building your own AI models.

What this usually involves?

  1. Choosing an AI Service

Example: ChatGPT (text), DALL-E (images), Whisper (speech-to-text), or a sentiment analysis API.

  2. Basic App Setup

A simple web or mobile app using tools like HTML/CSS/JavaScript, React, Python (Flask), etc.

  3. Connecting to the AI API

Using API keys and HTTP requests to send input to the AI and display the result in your app.

  4. Example Projects:

    • A chatbot app that talks like a virtual assistant.

    • An image caption generator.

    • A to-do list that suggests tasks based on your mood

    • A voice-controlled note taker using speech-to-text.

What’s the Goal for Building with AIs?

To help beginners:

  • Get hands-on experience with real AI tools.

  • Understand how AI can enhance software.

  • Learn how to wire up AI APIs into their own creations.

And Finally, Building with AI using Bolt

Building with AI using Bolt (that is, Bolt.new) means creating full-stack web and mobile apps by simply describing what you want in natural language, and Bolt’s AI will turn your idea into actual code and a live product — instantly.

What does “Build with AI” means on Bolt?

Bolt is designed to eliminate the need for traditional coding. Instead, you write a prompt like:

“I want an app that lets users log in, upload photos, and share them with friends.”

And Bolt will:

  • Generate the front-end (React/Next.js UI)

  • Generate the back-end (Node.js, databases, APIs)

  • Deploy the app live

  • Give you an editable code base to tweak or export if needed

What Makes Bolt Powerful?

Bolt has the following powerful features:

  • Prompt-to-App Builder: Just describe your idea - Bolt handles the rest.

  • No Code + Full Code Hybrid: Edit the design or code if you want more control.

  • Full Stack: Includes front-end, back-end, authentication, database, APIs.

  • One-click Deploy: Host your app live instantly.

  • Team Collaboration: Great for hackathons and team projects.

What Can We Build?

Some examples of AI-powered or AI-integrated apps you can create on Bolt:

  • AI Chatbots using OpenAI GPT (you just say “add a chatbot using GPT-4”)

  • Image Generator Apps (DALL-E, Stable Diffusion via API)

  • Sentiment Analysis Tools

  • Task automation apps (e.g., “automatically email a report every Friday”)

  • Custom dashboards for AI outputs or data analytics

Suggested Prompt Ideas:

“Build a recipe-sharing app with AI image generation for dishes.”

“Create a mental health journal with sentiment analysis and chat support.”

“Build a customer support app with a chatbot and ticket system.”

Why Bolt is great for beginners and non-coders?

  • No setup, no frameworks to learn.

  • You can start building your AI-powered app in minutes.

  • It helps you learn by building, and see how AI transforms your words into working software.

Thank you for reading! In a follow-up post in this series, I’ll do a step-by-step walk-through of one of these apps using AI on Bolt.

I am a Software/Web Developer from Durban, South Africa. I have been interested in web development for many as I saw that as a growing technology that will never end. My interests expanded to Game development when I learned that I can make games with HTML5 Canvas. I love coding games more than drag and drop features. I can't remember what got me interested in making games. I love teaching others programming, web skills and more about making games, that is game development and game design. I am now teamed up with a woman in Nigeria, actually from Benin, to start our own gaming studio and make games for change. Our first in our games production will be a series of games teaching players about climate change and how we can help improve the circumstances we find ourselves in.
