At Nrityangana, we're passionate about preservation and promotion of Kuchipudi, one of India's best classical dance forms. The academy supports a hands-on learning environment that merges tradition with discipline and creativity. Each student in our academy receives training with a focus on technique, expression and narrative. In a holistic learning experience, we cover not only the complexities of rhythm in Kuchipudi, but also the precision and grace needed to execute the movements. The process of learning Kuchipudi involves receiving instruction from an expert, working through repetition and controlled practice, and finally hunter-gathering the foundational elements of the form in order to enable engaging performances and development of a personal approach to art.

A unique aspect of Kuchipudi is the distinct and graceful Kuchipudi postures which serve as both the visual basis of the dance (as a range of elements for expression and visual communication), and the expressed basis (combining movement and postures) of the art form. Postures in Kuchipudi stem from Natya Shastra and are intended to illustrate equilibrium, emotions and storytelling. The Araimandi (half-sitting posture) is a notable example, as are the Alidha movements, and has several notable immersed hand gestures (mudras). These creative kinetic elements from Kuchipudi are representational of mythological stories in motion. To perform the postures however, the dancer must learn to establish their body in alignment, structure, balance, levels of flexibility, and levels of coordination. At Nrityangana, we can relate the transition of motion to different poses, with gracefulness and appropriate physical appearance.
