Enterprise applications are build to meet business and customer needs, but the environmental impact due to applications mostly remains as a afterthought.

Each and every application, it’s component and dependencies contributes to the energy consumption that can be address with Green coding. Using the ABCD framework proposed above, energy savings can be realized from every stage of the Software Development Life Cycle. Smart AI driven automations, policies for budgeting, well established payback and chargeback models, and effectively managed resource reuse can help in reducing the energy consumption along with cost for building applications.

Over provisioned capacities based on projected peak demand of applications leads to excessive energy wastages even when the applications are shutdown. The sustainable green digital future can be achieved with a judicious mix of sustainable design choices and balanced business objectives.

There is a huge opportunity for driving ‘experience’ and ‘innovation’ riding on the wave of digitization.

Organizations can adopt human-centric and people-focused framework to drive ESG commitments. Following five essential elements bring in the human centric approach to tackle the sustainability challenge.

  1. Regenerative future.

  2. Circular commerce.

  3. Human experience.

  4. System of systems.

  5. Digital Twins.

👉 For organizations transitioning to green IT and sustainable systems, Bridge Group Solutions offers support in digital transformation, cloud migration, and IT infrastructure optimization.

Along with human-centric approach, the green coding, moving to server less architecture, reducing server and datacenter energy consumption, is at the forefront of discussions for banking and financial services technology teams.

Internet Of things, Artificial Intelligence and Data can be leveraged to build interactive dashboards for tracking and monitoring the data center energy usage that can be used in disposition analysis of applications identified for cloud migration.

Focus on Application Resiliency:

Using AI Ops based intelligent, self-healing system design and site reliability engineering (SRE) principles application resiliency can be improved. Provision tools and accelerators that enable organizations to conduct the resiliency assessment of the application for Architecture, Monitoring, Automation, Redundancy, Infrastructure, Change Management, Security and Validation pillars.

Create a Sustainability Toolkit that includes:

Sustainable value propositions, automated assessments, green breakers, a library of UX behavioral sustainable design patterns, a trade-off analysis between functionality and sustainability, a sustainability dashboard, and a sustainable innovation approach based on design thinking and prototyping.

• To address ESG compliance and regulatory components of sustainability reporting, establish a special Sustainability Practice unit within the company.
• It is important to embrace the Sustainability by Design strategy, which encompasses the development of new digital behaviors, full-spectrum digital optimization, digital estate optimization, and website optimization.

What Is Green Coding

If you just pictured a line of code hugging a tree, same. But green coding is basically writing software in a way that minimizes energy consumption and hardware usage.

The idea is this: software runs on hardware, hardware uses electricity, and electricity (still mostly) comes from fossil fuels. So the more bloated and inefficient our code is, the more CO₂ gets pumped into the atmosphere.

The Dirty Secret of Digital Emissions

Let’s talk numbers. The ICT (Information and Communication Technology) sector is responsible for about 2–4% of global CO₂ emissions. That's more than the aviation industry.

I know our sleek, minimalist websites and cloud-based apps don't look like smog-belching factories, but trust me, those data centers are sweating harder than I do when someone says “merge conflicts.”

How I Started Coding Greener

1. Refactored the Heck Out of Everything

I used to think “if it works, don’t touch it.” Then I learned that some of my functions were using 10x more CPU than needed.

So I refactored. A lot. Cleaned up loops, reduced API calls, cut out unnecessary dependencies. It felt like cleaning out a digital hoarder’s closet.

2. Optimized Images Like a Maniac

Turns out, a 4MB PNG of a cat doesn't need to be on your landing page.

WebP, compression, lazy loading—I used it all. My site went from “slow-motion sloth” to “sleek cheetah on a caffeine high.”

3. Pushed for Dark Mode (And It Actually Helps!)

Besides being sexy, dark mode can reduce energy usage on OLED screens. And people love options, especially ones that are good for the planet.

Plus, it hides how tired I look on Zoom calls. Win-win.

4. Reduced Server Requests Like I Was on a Data Diet

Every call to the server is like a little CO₂ puff. So I minimized roundtrips and cached aggressively. Even the backend dev gave me a high-five and those are rare.
