Manta Rays in Bali: Where and When to Spot Them

If you're organizing a diving or snorkeling adventure in Bali, encountering manta rays should be a priority. These stunning creatures, known for their vast wings and graceful movements, provide an unforgettable wildlife experience in the sea. Unlike many types of sea life that are seasonal, manta rays can be observed throughout the year in Bali, particularly near Nusa Penida, which lies just southeast of the main island.
The top location to see manta rays in Bali is Manta Point, situated along the rugged southern coastline of Nusa Penida. This diving area benefits from nutrient-rich waters from the Indian Ocean, drawing in reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) nearly every day. These filter feeders can grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) wide and often cluster together at cleaning stations where small fish like wrasses assist in removing parasites from their skin. These intervals of calm allow divers a rare chance to closely observe their behavior.
While Manta Point is the most trustworthy site for sightings, manta rays can also be spotted occasionally at Manta Bay, Toyapakeh, and Crystal Bay, although appearances there are less reliable. Manta Point remains the preferred destination due to its consistent sightings and shallow reef area, making it ideal for both diving and snorkeling.
A significant benefit for those interested in mantas in Bali is that they do not undertake long migrations. They can be found year-round, but the best diving conditions typically happen from April to November. During these months, the waters are smoother, visibility is generally improved (often ranging from 15 to 30 meters), and there are more frequent plankton blooms, which enhance the likelihood of seeing large groups of mantas.
That said, it is still possible to catch a glimpse of mantas during the rainy season (December to March), although your trips will rely more on weather conditions, and the surface can be rougher. Generally, mornings are the optimal time to dive at Manta Point, as winds are usually calmer earlier in the day.
You don’t have to be an expert diver to interact with manta rays. Open Water certified divers can access Manta Point, where depths usually range from 10 to 20 meters. Snorkelers can also experience close moments with manta rays, as they often swim just below the water's surface. However, conditions can be bumpy due to exposure to open seas, so it's essential to go with a knowledgeable and safety-focused dive operator.
