Introduce yourself: Who Are You, Michael?

Hey!!

I’m thrilled to be doing this and to have you here reading this piece! :)
I’m Michael, and I’m working with Scribe for this Outreachy round. My project involves connecting Scribe’s end apps with the Scribe server—exciting stuff!

Outside of work, I enjoy long walks, sightseeing, gaming, and binge-watching series (though that rarely happens these days… I know, work, right? 😅).

Before learning about Outreachy, I had done a remote internship with another open-source organisation. I was curious to see if Outreachy would offer a similar level of engagement, and it has!

What’s kept me motivated? A mix of things: my love for open source, the chance to do meaningful work, working with people from different places and perspectives, and the drive to keep growing my skillset. I also feel connected to SDG 8 — we need strong economic growth, and I believe one way to achieve that is through innovation and empowering great minds.

So, for me, this internship is about expanding my mind, building my network, and enjoying the process.

My experience during the contribution phase was great. I had the privilege of engaging with the Scribe community earlier, and they’re always so welcoming. The communication during the contribution period was top-notch, and the whole experience felt reassuring.

One contribution I’m particularly proud of is:
fix: refine CLI to resolve languages data fetch inconsistency
This PR was challenging, but with every GitHub comment and suggestion, I understood the problem better. Eventually, I was able to implement a solid fix, and that process really boosted my confidence.

What I hope to gain from this internship is a deeper understanding of Go. While I’m still growing with it, I understand the fundamentals, and I’m excited to apply it to larger projects. That’s one thing Scribe definitely offers.

Also, working on Scribe-Android gives me the chance to brush up my Kotlin skills — I literally have a course I bought four years ago on Coursera (“Kotlin for Java Developers”) that I never finished! Now I have the chance to apply and improve on it.

Even though Android instrumentation testing feels challenging, it’s something I find very interesting. At the end of this internship, I want to become a better software engineer — someone who’s levelled up to a new height.

I’m looking forward to all the great things we Outreachy interns will do this round!
