Suryakumar Yadav scored 717 runs in IPL 2025, just 42 runs short of Orange Cap winner Sai Sudharsan. At the final presentation ceremony of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Suryakumar Yadav was honored with the prestigious Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the tournament.

Although Mumbai Indians (MI) were eliminated in the second qualifier against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Sunday (June 1) and did not make it to the final, Suryakumar was still recognized for his outstanding performance. He became the first MI player to win the MVP award since 2013 and only the second ever after Sachin Tendulkar, who won it in 2010.

Notably, Gujarat Titans (GT) batter Sai Sudharsan clinched the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs in the tournament, finishing with 759 runs. Suryakumar was the second-highest run-scorer, accumulating 717 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 167.91 and an impressive average of 65.18

How did Suryakumar Yadav win the Most Valuable Player award?

Unlike many tournaments where a committee selects the Player of the Tournament (POTT), the IPL uses a unique points-based system to determine its Most Valuable Player (MVP), which replaced the traditional POTT starting from the 2013 season. Before that, the POTT was awarded regularly.

This year, Suryakumar Yadav topped the leaderboard with 320.5 points, closely followed by Sudharsan with 311.0 points. No other player crossed the 300-point mark, with Yashasvi Jaiswal finishing third at 273 points.

Interestingly, even though Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) won the title, none of their players ranked in the top 10 for MVP points. Since the MVP system was introduced in 2013, only Sunil Narine of Kolkata Knight Riders last year has won the award while also being part of the championship-winning team.

Suryakumar Yadav: According to the scoring system, players earn 3.5 points for each six hit or wicket taken. They get 1 point for every dot ball bowled and for run-outs. Additionally, players receive 2.5 points for each four hit, catch taken, and stumping completed.
