Steve Smith is a key batsman for Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final. Following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL), attention now turns to the ICC WTC final, where Australia will take on South Africa. The match is scheduled to be held at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, starting on June 11.
Both teams have announced their squads and are preparing for this important contest. Australia will be led by Pat Cummins, while South Africa’s captain is Temba Bavuma.
Both sides secured their places in the final by finishing at the top of the points table. Australia enters the match as the defending champions and aims to retain the ICC Test mace. In the previous ICC WTC final (2021-23 cycle), Pat Cummins’ Australia defeated India to win the title.
Pat Cummins Confirms Steve Smith’s Batting Position for ICC WTC 2023-25 Final
Before the highly anticipated ICC World Test Championship final, Australia’s Test captain Pat Cummins revealed Steve Smith’s batting position during an interview on The Grade Cricketer show on Prime Video Australia. Cummins confirmed that Smith will bat at number four for the team.
“I can confirm that Smudge will be batting at four. As for everyone else, I’m not ready to say, but Steve Smith will definitely be number four,” Cummins stated.
Steve Smith is a key batsman for Australia in the upcoming match. He has been a consistent member of the Test side for nearly ten years. In the last WTC final, Smith scored a crucial century. With over 10,000 runs in 116 Tests, he is one of Australia’s most experienced batsmen.
Cummins also spoke about Australia’s aim to defend their WTC title since winning it in 2023. He said that while winning one title is great, winning two would be truly remarkable.
“Since our victory in 2023, there’s been a lot of talk about retaining the title and defending it. But it only becomes real when you actually make the final. Now that we’ve reached it, winning another ICC trophy would be amazing. Playing at Lord’s makes it even more special, as every Test-playing nation wants this trophy. It shows how strong we’ve been over the last few years,” said the right-arm pacer.
“We just missed out on the first WTC cycle (2019-2021), but I believe we are a better team now than we were back then. Winning two WTC titles would be incredible. One title already shows how good we’ve been,” Cummins added.
Meanwhile, South Africa currently leads the ICC WTC 2023-25 points table with a win percentage of 69.44%, having won eight matches, lost three, and drawn one in 12 games. Australia sits second with a 67.54% win rate, winning 13 matches, losing four, and drawing two in 19 games.
