Staying Sane When Life Gets Tough: The Role of Blogs and Book Summaries

TL;DR: Life gets tough sometimes, and staying motivated can be a challenge. Three resources that have helped me stay sane and focused are:
Quastor – digestible technical insights and industry news
The Pragmatic Engineer – deep dives into real-world engineering practices and tech careers
Summrize – free book summaries for quick learning and inspiration
Staying Sane When Life Gets Tough: The Role of Blogs and Book Summaries
There are stretches in life when things slow down—sometimes too much. Days feel longer, uncertainty weighs heavier, and the routine we once knew starts to dissolve. For me, one of the ways I’ve kept my focus and drive has been by surrounding myself with content that teaches, inspires, and motivates. When you’re not building something every day, consuming high-quality content becomes an anchor—reminding you of your goals and sharpening your mind for what’s next.
Three resources in particular have stood out and become part of my daily rhythm:
Quastor – Bite-Sized Tech Wisdom
Quastor is a brilliant newsletter that delivers engineering insights, system design breakdowns, and curated tech news—all in a format that’s easy to digest. It’s geared toward software engineers who want to deepen their understanding without wading through endless documentation. I love how it pairs technical concepts (like distributed systems or database internals) with industry trends, making it feel like a mini bootcamp and a tech newspaper in one.
The Pragmatic Engineer – Real-World Tech and Career Strategy
The Pragmatic Engineer by Gergely Orosz is a masterclass in modern software engineering. It goes beyond code—diving into team dynamics, career ladders, product culture, and the real challenges engineers face inside top tech companies. Some posts are free, others behind a paywall, but even the free content is rich with value. Reading it feels like sitting down with an experienced tech lead who pulls back the curtain on how the industry really works.
Summrize – Blinkist, But Free
Books are powerful, but not everyone has the time or energy to read entire volumes during rough patches. Summrize steps in as a free alternative to Blinkist, offering clean, concise summaries of non-fiction books. It’s been my go-to for mental refreshers and quick inspiration. Whether it’s business strategy, productivity, or psychology, a 5-minute read here can shift your mindset for the better.
Why This Matters
When things feel out of your control, feeding your mind becomes one of the few things you can control. Staying connected to the world of software through thoughtful blogs, newsletters, and summaries helps you feel less adrift. These resources have reminded me that growth doesn’t always happen through output—sometimes it happens through reflection, learning, and preparation.
So if you’re in a phase where momentum feels elusive, I’d recommend carving out time for thoughtful reading. It might not fix everything, but it can give you the clarity and motivation you need to keep moving forward—one day, one insight at a time.
