My Cloud Journey Begins: A Magical Analogy You Won't Forgot ✨

Table of contents
Hey everyone 👋
I’ve recently started learning about cloud computing, and honestly, it feels like stepping into a whole new world.
Coming from a background as a pre-sales engineer, where I usually dealt with physical hardware - servers, switches, cables and planned procurement processes, the concept of the cloud hit me differently. 🌩️
Back then, I thought of infrastructure as something you could touch, lift, carry, and install. But now? Everything I used to physically handle is available at my fingertips, ready to be spun up or scaled down with just a few clicks or commands. That realization kind of blew my mind!
So, I’ve decided to document my journey from here on. I’ll be sharing what I learn and how I’m bridging my knowledge from the hardware world into the cloud space. This is my very first post. 🌟
💭 Here’s how I picture the cloud as a beginner:
🧳 Traditional IT infrastructure is like Going on a camping trip with a heavy backpackYou have to:*
- Buy all your essentials
- Pack them yourself
- Carry them
And after the trip?
- Store them
- Maintain them
- Carry them again next time*
☁️ Cloud computing is like Borrowing Hermione Granger’s enchanted small bag for the trip ✨
If you’ve watched the Harry Potter movies, you probably remember this bag -
the tiny magical handbag Hermione carries in the Deathly Hallows films.
She used special charms to pack everything she and her friends needed to survive inside that one small bag - tents, clothes, books, food etc.
It looked small, but it held most of the things they needed to survive.
If you borrow that for your camping trip:you no longer need to:
- Buy the items
- Pack the bag
- Carry a heavy load
Instead, when you need something:
- Take your wand
- Point it at the bag
- Say the charm specialized to the thing you need
➡️ Poof! What you need appears in your hand within seconds!
No packing ➡️ No lifting ➡️ Just magic on demand 💫
Let’s map this analogy to a real-world cloud setup:
🎒 Heavy backpack = Traditional IT
(buying & maintaining your own hardware)
🧙♀️ Hermione Granger’s magical bag = Cloud Platform
(already packed with services)
✨ Hermione = Cloud Service Provider (CSP)
(CSP did all the provisioning for you)
🪄 Wand = Your Cloud Account
(your key to access services in the cloud)
📜 The Charm = API call or CLI request
(your command to fetch the service)
👤 You = The Cloud User
(just make a call → get what you need)
- No physical setup.
- No hardware wait times.
- No maintenance worries.
- Just on-demand services*
🌟 That’s how the cloud feels to me as a newbie.
What about you?
When you first started learning about the cloud, what was your experience like?
I'd love to hear your thoughts, analogies or first impressions👇
