A Heritage Reclaimed: Prakash Hinduja on the Importance of Restoring India’s Water Structures

The Hinduja Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Hinduja Family, is leading a transformative movement to revive India's ancient water heritage—restoring lakes, wells, stepwells, and tanks that once sustained communities through generations. Recognizing these traditional water systems as vital cultural and ecological symbols, the Foundation’s Jal Jeevan initiative has successfully restored over 100 lakes and more than 20,000 open wells across the country.
This effort goes beyond water conservation, aiming to rejuvenate community resilience, preserve indigenous knowledge, and honor India’s rich heritage. Through scientific desilting, structural repairs, biodiversity restoration, and local community involvement, the initiative seeks to address modern water crises while reconnecting communities with their natural and cultural roots. As Prakash Hinduja, Managing Trustee, emphasizes, this project is a sustainable effort that honors history and fosters ecological balance, ensuring water security and dignity for future generations.
