IIT Bombay Launches Online Diploma in IC Design to Boost India’s Semiconductor Ambitions

In a strategic move to support India’s growing semiconductor industry, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has introduced an online Postgraduate Diploma in Integrated Circuits (IC) Design. This 18-month e-learning programme is tailored for engineering graduates and working professionals seeking to build or enhance their expertise in chip and circuit design.

A Future-Focused Initiative

Launched in collaboration with global online learning platform Simplilearn, the programme has been developed by IIT Bombay’s Department of Electrical Engineering. It offers comprehensive training in digital and analog design, mixed-signal circuits, wireless communication systems, and system-level design. Participants will be required to complete seven courses totaling 36 credits to earn the prestigious diploma from IIT Bombay.

Addressing Industry Demand

The introduction of this course aligns with India’s substantial investments in semiconductor manufacturing, which currently includes five major projects worth over $18 billion. With the government aiming to boost electronics production to $500 billion by 2030, the demand for skilled professionals in IC design is rapidly growing.

Speaking at the launch, IIT Bombay Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare said, “This programme makes high-quality education accessible to a broader audience, especially working professionals. It not only builds technical depth but also empowers learners to contribute meaningfully to cutting-edge innovation.”

World-Class Learning, Made Flexible

Delivered entirely online by IIT Bombay’s expert faculty, the e-PGD offers flexibility for professionals to upskill without interrupting their careers. This initiative is part of a larger shift toward digital education that bridges academic excellence with industry requirements.

Mr. Kashyap Dalal, Co-founder and COO of Simplilearn, added, “We are honored to partner with IIT Bombay on this forward-thinking programme. It sets a new benchmark in semiconductor education and helps shape future leaders in IC design.”

A Step Toward a Skilled Semiconductor Workforce

As India aspires to lead in semiconductor innovation, initiatives like IIT Bombay’s ePGD in IC Design will play a crucial role in nurturing a skilled, future-ready workforce. This programme marks a significant advancement in the intersection of higher education and national technological goals.
